Chris Kamara reinvents the ‘chip butty’ to celebrate National Fish & Chip Day, today

National Fish & Chip DayToday, on the 10th anniversary of National Fish and Chip Day, the iconic 80’s snack, Fish ‘N’ Chips, rolls into London’s Camden Market with a never seen before one-day pop-up serving up free, unexpected butties with a twist. The world’s first Fish and Chips van that serves neither fish nor chips, as you traditionally know it…we’re talking biscuit-loaded butties served three ways with traditional sides like mushy peas and curry sauce, to surprising condiments like chocolate sauce.

Fronted by football legend and national treasure, Chris Kamara (Kammy), the pop-up comes off the back of new research revealing the UK’s fish and chip eating habits. Findings show that while traditional toppings still reign supreme, a wave of adventurous diners is redefining the nation’s favourite dish.

Brits still can’t resist the timeless charm of ketchup (41%), mayonnaise (22%) or the undisputed OGs of fish and chips with salt (57%) and vinegar (55%). Surprisingly, some once-popular options like curry sauce (18%), gravy (10%) and brown sauce (7%) are falling out of favour when it comes to enjoying our chippy supper.

There’s also a small but spirited group of food adventurers out there, with one in 30 Brits now pairing their fish and chips with unconventional condiments. From custard and peanut butter to maple syrup, strawberry jam and even chocolate spread, these choices suggest that for a few daring diners, the dish is beginning a new flavour journey.

And the creativity doesn’t end there. When it comes to sides, we’re branching out way beyond the basics. Mushy peas (35%) and baked beans (11%) remain firm favourites, but surprisingly, one in five Brits now enjoy unusual accompaniments including pineapple rings, jellied eel, and ice cream.

Even the humble chip butty is getting a remix. A shocking one in 20 say they’d consider topping theirs with golden syrup, while others admit they’d be open to experimenting with chocolate spread, custard, and jam.

Enter Fish’N’Chips; the iconic biscuit brand honouring all the unexpected ways Brits enjoy their chippy tea, but with a twist. From reinvented classics to head-turning flavour mashups, the pop-up experience brings new energy to a beloved British staple snack.

TV personality and sporting legend, Kammy, says: “What a day down in Camden! Hundreds of punters turned up to get stuck into Fish’N’Chips, back with a bang and a few tasty twists. I was out there on the streets, bringing the legendary snack back into the spotlight, and let me tell you, the buzz was electric! So many smiling faces, loving the nostalgia and tucking into the tasters, it was the perfect way to celebrate National Fish and Chip Day. Proper magic!”

Fish ‘N’ Chips customer and Kammy fan, Lewis Hughes, 39 from East London, commented: “The fish and chip butties were fantastic. And what a surprise having the legend Kammy serve them! I actually got to meet him for the first time, and I’ve idolised that guy since I was a kid.

He added: “I’ve had Burton’s Fish ‘N’ Chips before, and I did think about the chocolate sauce, but I prefer to go the traditional way.”

Marketing controller for Burton’s Fish ‘N’ Chips, Sital Parmar, says: “It’s been amazing to see so many people join us in Camden to celebrate National Fish and Chip Day. We’re proud to be bringing Fish’N’Chips back into the spotlight, serving up a fresh take on a British classic, with nostalgic bites and unexpected flavours. With Kammy behind the counter and the buzz on the street, it’s been a fantastic way to reintroduce a much-loved favourite snack in a really fun way.”

Burton’s Fish ‘N’ Chips is available in all the following stores: Home Bargains, B&M, Poundland, Poundstretcher, Iceland, and Farmfoods.
