Co-op unveils new wines including first Greek wine

Co-opShoppers popping to Co-op this autumn will find a plethora of new and exciting wines in stores, including its first ever Greek wine.

The leading convenience retailer’s new offer – available in stores from this week – includes the extension of Co-op’s own-brand “Irresistible” range with its first Greek wine and a new premium Chilean Fairtrade Chardonnay. New branded lines have also been added, boosting the retailer’s growing sustainable and ethical wine offering.

Demand for Greek wines are currently seeing a growth in the market and the new Co-op Irresistible Assyrtiko 2023 (13% ABV, 75cl, £10) (ve) is a refreshing and crisp white wine made using Greek national treasure ‘Assyrtiko’ grapes. This exclusive blend is produced by family winery, Kir-Yianni in Macedonia – the first Greek winery to join International Wineries for Climate action, supporting the building of wildlife corridors.

And new to its Fairtrade range, the Irresistible Fairtrade Chardonnay 2024 (13.5%, 75cl, £8.75) (ve) is a crisp fresh cool-climate white with bright peachy fruit flavours from the vineyards of Casablanca Valley, close to the Pacific Ocean.

Two new Fairtrade branded lines have also been added – Mount Rozier Fairtrade Shiraz Malbec 2024 (11% ABV, 75cl, £6.75) (ve) and Stormhoek Cape Tradition Fairtrade Sparkling Rosé 2024 (9% ABV, 75cl, £6.00) (ve), both from South Africa.

Sarah Benson, Co-op wine buyer, said: “We have been championing Fairtrade for the last 30 years at Co-op, and are committed to growing the offer by introducing newness and excitement to the wine aisles. We also continue to seek out great value and quality from new trending regions, and Greece is a great example of area that’s growing in popularity that’s driven purely by tourism.”

Also new to the range, The Lot Series French Red 2022 (13.5% ABV, 75cl, £8.85) exclusively joins Co-op’s range in partnership with co-operative, Les Vignerons de Saint Chinian. The wine is designed to celebrate the regional and stylistic diversity on offer in South of France. Each vintage will see a rotation of parcels, starting with a Minervois.

Benson continued: “The concept of The Lot Series is that we will continue to rotate the wine to showcase the great value, good quality that Southern French wines have to offer.”

The new wine sees Co-op trial a new innovative label, which gives the bottle an embossed appearance whilst being 31% lighter and saving 140g of glass per bottle.

A first for the UK market,  the ‘Glass Label’ doesn’t need to be removed from the bottle and is fully recyclable.

The move is part of Co-op’s lightweighting ambitious work, which has already been implemented across its Chile, South Africa, Spain and Australia ranges and has seen it reduce its carbon footprint of wines by as much as 34% with the average bottle weight across its entire own brand range at 404g.
