Currys is here to save Christmas with the launch of the limited edition AAdvent Calendar – a boring, yet practical advent calendar with 24 doors, each hiding a battery to ensure kids are ready to play on Christmas Day. Whilst it may not be a glam beauty or coffee lover themed calendar, new Currys research reveals that well over half of British parents (61%) have forgotten to buy batteries for their children’s Christmas presents, making this the calendar parents really need to save them from tears and tantrums this Christmas.
Many of us have assumed batteries were included in toys and gadgets, only to open them and find the slot empty. Cue rummaging around in that ‘bits and bobs’ drawer or random cupboards for the elusive battery that has power and is actually the right size; Parents spend an average of 13 minutes doing this on Christmas Day before giving up. Three out of five families are dealing with tears and tantrums, regretting not buying new batteries. Nearly half (45%) of parents say their kids try to stay strong but get upset when they realise what’s missing, though they eventually move on. The youngest children are particularly sad with 58% of 3-year-olds getting upset.
The hunt for batteries doesn’t fit in with big festive plans either, with 60% of parents saying it disrupts precious family moments. In fact, 25% of parents determined to find a solution will walk to the nearest open shop, while 42% find temporary (albeit inconvenient) fixes by removing batteries from other devices.
Parents got the power!

Currys’ category director, Michelle Gorringe-Smith, said:“The last thing any family wants on Christmas Day is stressed parents and kids’ quivering bottom lips when they realise, they can’t play with their favourite new toy as batteries weren’t included. We’ve all been there! We want to help parents all over the country have a very merry Christmas rather than one with tears and tantrums, making sure they can make the most of important family moments. This is why we’ve created probably the most boring advent calendar out there, but certainly the most useful one.”
The limited edition AAdvent Calendar is available to purchase online from the 28th of November whilst stocks last for £5.
