The average price of a coffee from a high street coffee shop has soared to £3.80 a cup leaving many Brits short of pocket through the working week.
This equates to a whopping £836 if you’re buying a coffee every morning before heading to the office.
By investing in a barista-worthy bean to cup or pod home coffee machine, households can save money without compromising on quality.
A pod coffee machine uses small ‘pods’ which produce coffee from contents packed inside whereas bean to cup machines use the traditional coffee beans when making a brew.
With an average coffee pod valued at 68p a day and coffee beans as low as 13p a day, either method can see you saving mega money by ditching the coffee shops.
Thea Whyte, small appliances expert at AO.com, has broken down the data to why making a change makes sense.
She said: “Buying a coffee machine is an easy decision when you see the difference between how much coffee shop trips set you back to enjoying a coffee machine brew at home.
“If you’re buying a coffee before work at £3.80 a pop, this quickly accumulates to £19 a week, and then it totals to £836 a year before you know it.
“Then compare that to investing in a pod coffee machine. On average the appliance will cost you £67 then a standard box of pods will cost £5.88.
“One pod a day over the course of a year will set you back £149.60. When you take this and the price of the machine away from the £836 saved from trips to the coffee shop, you have made a massive saving of £619.40 in a single year!
“If your budget allows it and you’re a diehard coffee fan then a bean to cup may be more to your taste.
“You can pick up at a machine at AO.com for £300 and your run-of-the-mill 1kg bag of coffee beans will cost £13.84 on average.
“This means that you’re spending 13p a day on coffee beans which becomes a more tolerable £41.50 a year.
“Even with the larger fee for the machine, you’re still saving a huge £494.50 in a year by scrapping those coffee shop trips.
“You could even buy both pod and bean to cup machines including the pods and coffee beans and you’d still save big money – £277.90 in a year to be precise.
“Coffee in either machine produces a cup of joe worthy to challenge a coffee shop, all in the comfort of your own home. Investing now is truly a no-brainer.”
