Irish fruit importer, Fyffes has been commended for its contribution to environmental sustainability at the PwC Business Post Sustainable Business Awards gala ceremony held in Dublin recently.
The global tropical produce distributor was honoured with the ‘Sustainable Project of the Year: Agri- food’ 2025 award, on foot of what judges termed the ‘excep7onal efforts’ made by the organisation in successfully implemen7ng sustainable farming practices across its operations, resulting in significant environmental benefits. Chief amongst them is the introduction of crownless pineapples to reduce food waste; moving to 100% recyclable, reusable or compostable packaging before 2026; and the implementation of Regenerative Agriculture on its farms to improve biodiversity, soil health and reduce GHG emissions.
Accepting the award on behalf of the organisation, Ciaran Sweeney, managing director at Fyffes Ireland thanked adjudicators for their recognition, adding: “We are proud to see the measures we have taken towards environmental sustainability acknowledged particularly when – for the first 7me in over 130 years – the sustainability of Fyffes business model has been under threat as a result of the devastating impacts of climate change.
In further comment, Fyffes chief corporate affairs officer, Caoimhe Buckley said: “Although fresh produce has the lowest environmental footprint of all agriculture, it nonetheless produces significant greenhouse gas emissions and we have a continued commitment to reducing this footprint across all aspects of our global opera7ons.”
Now in its fourth year, the awards are adjudicated upon by an independent panel of judges and recognise leadership, innovation, investment and ingenuity from Ireland’s leading companies, public and private, in the areas of Environment, Social and Governance (ESG).
