Snappy Shopper delivery app becomes first to offer Reduce To Clear

Snappy ShopperA third of all food made for human consumption ends up in landfill. A statistic that, in a cost-of-living crisis, is something more than ever that needs to be combatted. This is why the fastest-growing home delivery app serving convenience stores, Snappy Shopper, has teamed up with anti-food waste company, Gander, to become the first delivery app to offer reduce to clear items for home delivery.

In Scotland alone, 600,000 tonnes of food and drink waste ends up in landfill each year. Produce that, if distributed more efficiently, could have easily been consumed rather than becoming part of a global problem. With this in mind, Snappy Shopper and Gander have  launched a pioneering move which initially sees two CJ Lang stores in Scotland, Spar Abronhill and Spar Stonehouse, trialling a feature for a 12-week period, with the aim for it to be rolled out across all Snappy Shopper stores in the coming months – a move that will have a huge impact for both shoppers and the environment alike.

If Scotland is going to reach the Scottish Government’s target of reducing food waste by 33% by 2025, it needs everyone pulling in the same direction to do more and working together. Snappy Shopper and Gander’s new feature, a first for any delivery app, works by allowing Snappy Shopper customers to purchase reduce to clear items for delivery as part of their normal shop, reducing food waste as well as offering customers the opportunity to buy a selection of fresh food at reduced prices.  The ripple-effect also created by this feature is unseen in grocery delivery to date. Benefitting retailers by reducing wastage costs, customers by offering easy and quick access to reduce to clear goods, and the planet by reducing landfill and food waste, it’s a landmark moment for grocery delivery.

Mike Callachan, founder & chief executive officer, said: “Our partnership with Gander to offer reduced to clear items to Snappy Shopper users is something we are incredibly excited about. Not only is this a first-of-its-kind feature, but it enables our retailers to reduce their wastage, meaning they can improve their margins while also supporting their local community as well as having a huge impact on the environment. We are so excited to see the results it has for both our retailers and customers.”

Sonya Harper, central operations director at Spar Scotland, said: “As a convenience store business, we feel it is important to reduce the amount of food waste that ends up in landfill. This partnership allows us to reach more customers and make even more of a difference.”

Stacey Williams, head of business development at Gander, said: “At Gander, we are passionate about finding solutions that reduce food waste while creating value for our customers. It is a huge milestone for retail that reduced to clear food can now be sold on a delivery app, giving consumers the power to make sustainable and cost-saving choices from the comfort of their homes. We are delighted to partner with Snappy Shopper, SPAR Scotland, and Retail Solutions to make this revolutionary retail concept a reality. “
