What can retailers learn from the online casino industry?

The UK has the biggest regulated online casino market in the world. This industry has been so successful due to its marketing, as well as its transparency and willingness to embrace new technologies. The success rate of online gambling sites doesn’t look to be diminishing any time soon.

Clearly, much can be learned from the enduring success of virtual casinos. One particular industry that needs to copy the initiatives of online casinos is the retail industry.

Online casinos are transparent and upfront about their licensing and privacy policies, and this transparency is a key lesson for retailers.

The UK online casino industry got so big by being properly regulated. In the UK, casinos that operate online need to acquire a license awarded by the UK Gambling Commission.

Once acquired, these sites often advertise themselves as being “fully licensed”.

Gambling companies also advertise the schemes and charities they’re affiliated with. On many of these platforms’ homepages, you can clearly see if the company abides by the gambling standards set by BeGambleAware, the Gambling Commission, and Gamstop.

However, casinos not on Gamstop are also popular within the UK. These websites work under a different regulatory framework (they hold their licences overseas), meaning they don’t need to comply with the Gamstop scheme. Similarly, online retail platforms might be based outside the UK and have different regulations than UK customers are used to. So, all of this information should be clearly and transparently displayed on the site so there are no unexpected surprises for customers.

If financial risk checks need to occur, the bettor will be told about these checks before they take place. Overall, this level of transparency helps establish trust between the gambling site and the bettor.

The retail industry could benefit from being upfront about licenses and privacy policies. This will help you build trust with your customers. By gaining a customer’s trust, you increase the chances of them completing a purchase.

Another key lesson from casinos is to offer multiple payment options. The more payment options provided, the more sales you’ll get. Online gambling sites are known for accepting a range of payment methods: Aside from debit and credit card transactions, these sites often also accept payment platforms such as PayPal, Neteller, and Skrill.

This range in payment acceptance allows online gambling sites to cater to a wider range of customers. Having their preferred method of payment available ensures bettors on the safety and security of their payment.

Similarly, the more methods of payment that a retailer offers, the more payments you can secure.

It’s not just about eWallets and debit cards in 2023, however. Part of the success of online casinos lies in their acceptance of multiple payment options, including crypto. Online bettors prefer to use cryptocurrency as it allows for quick, easy, and instant transactions. It also cuts out the middleman, as they require no banks or payment processing services.

Recently, the UK government made stablecoins a valid form of payment in a bid to make the nation more crypto-friendly. Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies that have value pegged to a currency or other financial instrument. Examples include Tether and Binance USD.

So, now that crypto has been made more acceptable, retailers should definitely take this as the cue to start accepting cryptocurrency as a form of payment.

In the retail industry, customer support is everything. You can address customer concerns promptly and accurately in-store very easily. But what about online?

Nearly all online gambling sites provide customer support through live chat. A lot of the time, a real person will be on the other end answering all queries as and when they occur.

Live chat keeps bettors engaged in the site as any problems they’re having can be resolved easily.

While employing live chat agents to work 24/7 to provide customer support on your retail site may not be possible, you could certainly adopt an AI chat feature to help your customers out.

With a quality AI chatbot, you can provide prompt responses to your customers. Not only does this automate a routine task, but it also increases the chances of a customer completing a purchase.

Live chat could increase your conversion rate by as much as 20%.

Finally, retail businesses can learn a lot from the promotions offered by online casinos. Gambling platforms often compete against each other over who can provide the best incentive for prospective bettors. You’ll often see offers of a “£20 free bet” and a “200% bonus” given to new members of the gambling site.

While these don’t always guarantee long-term customers, they certainly increase the level of new players signing up for the site.

Incentives like these work for gambling sites, and they can also work for retail businesses. Invite customers to visit your store with a promotion, such as “20% off your first purchase”. This will almost guarantee a sale and hopefully secure a returning customer, especially if you keep regular offers coming.

There’s a lot that can be learned from the success of online casinos. If you own a retail business, you have to look at the success of gambling sites for inspiration on how to make your own business more successful. For example, you need to provide more transparency, payment options, customer assistance, and promotions.
