John Lewis launches second hand childrenswear with thelittleloop

John Lewis will be partnering once again with thelittleloop, the UK’s leading platform for pre-loved and rented children’s clothing to launch a twelve month concession offering pre-loved clothing for children.

The space will be on the fourth floor of our John Lewis Flagship shop offering second hand clothing for babies and children between 0-6 years of age. This follows a rise in demand for pre-loved clothing, with second hand clothing sales on track to make up ten percent of the global fashion market next year (according to a report by GlobalData for ThredUp).

Danielle Gagola, Innovation Lead at John Lewis said, “Bringing resale options like thelittleloop into shops is a great way to encourage more of our customers to purchase in a more sustainable and affordable way.

“Children grow out of clothes so quickly, that often they can be left in the back of wardrobes. With thelittleloop we’re encouraging customers to purchase second hand clothing and they can also pick up a bag to trade in their outgrown clothing in return for store credit too. We’re hoping customers will support this and drive change in the way they shop.”

The offering will include dresses, jumpers, jackets and t-shirts from prices starting as little as £5. Each garment will be categorised into Brand News, Excellent, Very Good and Good. Pricing will be determined based on the item’s condition and approximate retail price. However, on average customers will save 60% of the cost of buying new.

Customers are also able to pick up a pouch or two, to take home to fill with their children’s pre-loved items and will be able to post them directly to thelittleloop and receive a £5 credit per full bag to spend back at thelittleloop online.

Charlotte Morley, Founder of thelittleloop said, “This is an amazing opportunity to bring thelittleloop to the highstreet through one of Britain’s best loved brands. Over 84% of parents are now using online apps to shop secondhand for their children’s clothing but not everyone finds it easy or trusts the quality of clothes sent in the post. So we’re delighted to be able to bring it to life and help even more people to experience the joy of preloved.”

thelittleloop has resold around 10,000 items since launching second hand clothing last year, saving 2.5 tonnes of clothing waste, 150 Tonnes of CO2e and 6 million litres of water. Through our John Lewis concession alone we project selling around 20,000 more garments over the next year.

Other ways we’re helping encourage our customers to shop more sustainably is working with LEGO on their LEGO Replay programme. Donate your old bricks and the donations will be transformed to provide playful learning opportunities for children across the UK. We also launched our new circular design collection, designed to be longer lasting, and tested to the highest durability standards across fashion and homeware products.

For new parents, John Lewis has also launched ‘The New Parent Starter Kit Box’ this week, worth £180 or free when you spend £120 or more on select nursery and babywear. It is specially curated for parents and baby, the box is a mix between practical and pampering. And for older children, please find our SS24 kidswear lookbook here.

The concession will be located on the kids’ floor of our Oxford Street shop, 12-6pm, Tuesday – Sunday.
