Independent retailer donates £1,500 to support community groups through Co-op Wholesale charity

Co-op Wholesale charityIndependent retailer, Mike Sohal, from Nisa Dallam, has donated £1,500 from its Making a Difference Locally fund to three local groups doing outstanding work in the Dallam area. Surestart, Ace Badminton and Winnington Park Rugby Club each received £500 with the funding supporting three very different initiatives.

These donations follow on from the recent rebrand of Nisa Dallam under the new symbol group proposition from Co-op Wholesale. The fresh, modern fascia identity elevates Nisa’s presence on the high street and reflects the energy of a reimagined symbol group, which is alongside Co-op Wholesale’s long‑standing charity, Making a Difference Locally (MADL), also receiving a refresh with a bolder identity, strengthening its visibility and continuing its mission to support local causes.

Surestart will use their donation to host a Mother’s Day event for families in Dallam, alongside a series of activities that put wellbeing at the forefront. Their team works closely with local mums to build confidence and connection, and they’ve seen countless women go on to volunteer with other groups – supporting and inspiring parents who are facing the same challenges they once did.

Ace Badminton is a newly formed sports group run by three volunteers who wanted to create a space where men could focus on wellbeing and connection rather than competitive performance. What began 12 months ago with just five participants has grown to 48 regular members attending weekly sessions. The funding will help keep subscription costs low, making it easier for more men to get involved.

Winnington Park Rugby Club said the funding will make a huge difference to their squad, opening up opportunities for children from a wide range of backgrounds. They plan to use the donation to fund entries into upcoming rugby festivals, giving young players experiences and memories that will stay with them for years and helping to strengthen the bonds within the team. The club is passionate about using rugby to teach life lessons, and they believe support like this helps shape their young players into the very best versions of themselves.

Kate Carroll, social value lead at Co-op Wholesale, said: “This is exactly what our Making a Difference Locally fund is all about — empowering retailers to support the groups that make their communities stronger. Mike’s donation is helping three fantastic organisations create opportunities, build confidence and bring people together, and we’re incredibly proud to see the difference it will make in Dallam.”

Co-op Wholesale’s long‑standing charity, Making a Difference Locally (MADL), also sees a refresh with a bolder identity, strengthening its visibility and continuing its mission to support local causes. MADL remains on track to hit a total of £20m raised, by this year, reinforcing its role as a powerful differentiator for Nisa retailers.
