Selfridges brings profitability back into fashion, says GlobalData

Following the release of Selfridge’s figures for the 52 weeks ending 4 January 2026; Ashley Adeyemi, retail analyst at GlobalData, a leading intelligence and productivity platform, offers her view: “Selfridges returned to the black in FY2025/26, as stronger store performance and improved margins helped deliver its first pre-tax profit since 2019. Revenue rose 7.3% to £830.8m in the 52 weeks to 4 January 2026, although this figure was flattered by the previous reporting period covering only 48 weeks. Comparatively, operating profit increased 88% to £79.7m, and the retailer recorded a £13.0m pre-tax profit, reversing a £15.9m loss in the prior period. This improvement suggests stronger operating leverage and leaves Selfridges better positioned to absorb ongoing luxury market headwind while continuing to invest in its store-led proposition. The absence of tax-free shopping remains a particular constraint for the department store chain, encouraging some high-spending international tourists to shop in competing European destinations, and Selfridges continues to lobby for the VAT refund scheme to be reinstated.

“Selfridges’ stores drove its performance while online sales declined, reinforcing the value of its destination-led proposition. In February 2025, it expanded Selfridges Unlocked, its 1.3-million-member loyalty programme, to reward customers for attending events, using restaurants and services as well as making purchases. Its ‘Summer of Sound’ programme also brought live performances, a Rough Trade record shop and other music-led activations into stores. Alongside encouraging repeat visits, such initiatives broaden Selfridges’ relevance among younger shoppers, for whom experiences, fandom and cultural participation can provide an entry point into the retailer even when luxury purchases remain less accessible. Furthermore, investment has also focused on categories where stores retain a clear advantage over online shopping. Selfridges expanded its Birmingham beauty space by 20% to 30,000 sq ft in Autumn 2025, increasing space for niche, founder-led and Korean beauty brands alongside services and events. This strengthens its position in a category where trial, advice and discovery remain important, while differentiating its offer from online specialists and brands’ direct channels. Furthermore, the April 2026 opening of 40 Duke, a dedicated personal-shopping and hospitality destination for top-tier Unlocked members, should help deepen relationships with its highest-value customers.

“However, Selfridges’ online proposition requires greater attention. The department store retailer should translate more of the discovery and curation that distinguishes its stores online, using AI-enabled personalisation and stronger edits around styles, aesthetics and occasions to make its extensive range easier to navigate. Improving digital discovery would allow Selfridges to extend its destination-led positioning beyond its stores, reach luxury shoppers irrespective of their ability to visit the UK and provide a stronger route to growth while international tourism remains uncertain.

“Maintaining this momentum will be challenging in FY2026/27. The conflict in Iran has increased energy and fuel costs and added to inflationary pressures, risking further weakness in consumer confidence and discretionary spending. Selfridges is also more exposed than many UK retailers to international luxury shoppers, making disruption to travel from the Middle East an additional risk. Burberry, for example, reported that lower tourist spending linked to the conflict weighed on European trading in Q1 FY2026/27. Combined with the continued absence of tax-free shopping, this increases the risk of Selfridges becoming overly reliant on domestic store traffic to sustain growth.”
