Shopify, a provider of essential internet infrastructure for commerce, today announced a record-setting Black Friday, Cyber Monday weekend (BFCM), with sales of $9.3 billion USD globally from independent businesses worldwide – a 24% increase in sales from 2022. London was in the top three highest-selling cities globally for Shopify merchants this BFCM. Furthermore, in-store spending surged 28% in the UK, compared to last year based on POS sales made by Shopify merchants.

Deann Evans, Managing Director, EMEA at Shopify commented: “Whilst many predicted a particularly challenging period for retailers as consumers tighten their purse strings, our data this Black Friday – which sets a new record – reinforces its importance as a positive revenue moment for merchants. More than ever, shoppers want their money to go further so they were ready to spend during the Black Friday weekend to get more value for money. Brands who continue to embrace this opportunity in the run up to Christmas stand to benefit as shoppers make the most of festive deals. Gymshark, which was among those with top trending products with their Crest Joggers, is setting a great example here.”

According to Shopify’s Black Friday Cyber Monday 2023 Report, UK consumers are becoming more savvy with 83% revealing they will compare prices to see where the best deals are and 68% citing cost as one of the biggest reasons they would switch brands. But it is not just cost, it’s quality with three quarters (77%) saying they want higher quality products that will last for a long time.

The Black Friday Cyber Monday weekend is the biggest shopping event of the year for Shopify merchants like Gymshark, Ooni and Blakely, and beyond that, a moment that showcases the power and impact independent businesses have around the globe. This year over the full weekend, 19% of sales were cross-border orders – underlining the strength of UK export for Shopify merchants.
