TradePro and retail momentum drives Wickes’ H1 results, says GlobalData

Following today’s release of Wickes’ figures for the six months ending 28 June 2025; Emily Scott, retail analyst at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers her view: “Wickes had a robust first half of its FY2025, with total group revenue rising 5.6% year-on-year to £847.9m, as the retailer continues to reinforce its value and service proposition. Growth was volume-led, supported by stable pricing and warm spring weather which encouraged consumers to take on DIY garden projects. Retail sales saw an impressive uplift to £634.4m, reflecting the strong demand across timber, garden maintenance and decorating categories. As part of its physical growth strategy, Wickes opened two new stores in H1 2025 (both conversions of former Homebase sites), with five to seven total openings targeted for the full year. Wickes’ ongoing store refit programme, with one store fully fitted and three more refreshed in H1, has helped improve instore navigation and product presentation, something which Wickes has struggled with previously and should help attract shoppers.

“After a prolonged period of pressure, Wickes’ Design & Installation (D&I) business has begun to recover, with revenue growth of 2.1%, reaching £213.4m. While Q1 saw a modest sales decline, performance turned around in Q2 with 5.7% growth and a return to positive like-for-like (l-f-l) sales – the first quarter it has reported this since Q2 FY2023. This turnaround can be credited to actions taken late in 2024 to enhance the customer proposition, such as improved design consultations, quicker service times from the initial consultation, and heightened marketing. Q2 also marked the third consecutive quarter of growth in ordered sales, suggesting a healthier pipeline for future installations. This momentum and marketing push positions the D&I segment to make a better contribution to group performance in the second half.

“TradePro continues to be the standout performer, with sales up 10% in H1 and active memberships rising 14% to 615,000. Its performance not only reflects operational strength but also alignment with the needs of its trade customers. However, to attract more non-trade shoppers, Wickes could leverage its DIY expertise by introducing instore and online DIY workshops tailored to novice renovators. Offering themed sessions, such as garden transformation tips, could create a community-driven retail experience, encouraging repeat visits and loyalty among non-trade customers. This initiative would also complement the existing TradePro focus, broadening the customer base without diluting the strength of its trade brand and appeal among tradespeople.”
