Following today’s release of Somnigroup’s figures for the 13 weeks ending 30 September 2025; Matt Walton, senior retail analyst at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers his view: “The acquisition of Mattress Firm, which contributed $1.1bn in sales, has continued to inflate Somnigroup’s topline performance with its net sales up 63.3% to $2.1bn in its Q3 FY2025. Margins also improved during the period, with its gross margin increasing by 2.5ppts on last year to 44.9%, aided by the elimination of sales to Mattress Firm as well as achieving operational efficiencies. The boost from Mattress Firm should not detract from a strong underlying performance, however. Once Mattress Firm’s sales and the decline from Tempur Sealy North America no longer selling to Mattress Firm have been stripped out, sales still increased by 5.0%. Indeed, the 5% uplift of like-for-like sales at Tempur Sealy North America is its strongest performance in the last nine quarters. This is impressive given subdued consumer sentiment, with US shoppers starting to be more considered with their purchases.
“Its International Direct Sales division, which includes Dreams, outperformed the underlying North American business, growing by 11.9% to $202.8m. As Dreams accounts for the majority of this division’s sales, this means that it has again comfortably outperformed the UK bedroom furniture market in Q3 2025. Its greater focus at the start of 2025 on promoting product quality and service has helped the retailer attract shoppers and trade them up to more premium products, while reassuring more constrained shoppers that they are getting good value for money. International wholesale revenues also improved, but higher fixed costs and an unfavourable mix led to its gross and operational margins declining by 0.4 and 0.1 ppts respectively within this segment.
“Undoubtedly, Somnigroup will continue to be supported by the acquisition of Mattress Firm for the remainder of 2025, but its UK prospects are more challenging. It will be going up against a double-digit comparative and facing greater competition from IKEA, the bedroom furniture market leader, whose performance has started to turn around. Shoppers are being more considered with their spending in the run-up to the Autumn Budget, ahead of anticipated tax increases, discouraging some shoppers from trading up in the final three months of the year. Focusing more on customer service and attracting more affluent shoppers will therefore be pivotal for Dreams to finish the year strong.”
