Brits ditch sugar-heavy pancakes as ‘healthy pancake’ searches jump 180%

As Pancake Day approaches, Brits are increasingly ditching traditional sugar-laden pancakes in favour of healthier alternatives they can enjoy all year round.

New Google Trends data shows a sharp rise in searches for healthier pancake recipes in the past month, suggesting attitudes towards the annual tradition are changing.

UK searches for “healthy banana pancakes” jumped by 200%, while “sweet potato pancakes” rose by 180%. Searches for “healthy pancake recipes” were also up 180%, with “almond flour pancakes” increasing by 160% and “healthy pancakes” up 80%. According to nutritionists, the trend reflects a wider shift towards balanced eating rather than one-off indulgence.

“Pancake Day has traditionally been about indulgence and using up ingredients before Lent,” says Sarah Fancourt, lead nutritionist at Gousto. “But many people are now well into their New Year health kicks and don’t want to feel like one day of sugar-heavy food knocks them off track. That’s why we’re seeing more interest in pancakes that feel lighter, more balanced and easier to enjoy as part of everyday eating.”

Why Brits are searching for healthier pancakes

Nutritionists say the rise in healthier pancake searches is being driven by changing food habits, with more people paying attention to protein, fibre and energy levels.

“Pancakes made with higher-protein ingredients tend to be more filling,” Fancourt explains. “That’s why people are now looking for recipes they can enjoy beyond Pancake Day, whether for breakfast or as a lighter meal option.”

Search interest in protein pancakes and low-calorie pancake recipes has also increased, highlighting demand for pancakes that offer more staying power than traditional white flour versions.

Nutritionist Recommended: A High-Protein, Low-Sugar Pancake

For those looking to keep Pancake Day lighter, Sarah Fancourt recommends a high-protein pancake made with cottage cheese, which is naturally low in sugar and calories while still feeling satisfying.

“Cottage cheese is high in protein and relatively low in fat and sugar,” Sarah says. “Blending it into pancake batter creates a fluffy texture while helping keep the meal balanced and filling.”

High-Protein Cottage Cheese Pancakes
Serves: 2
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 10 minutes

Ingredients
100g low-fat cottage cheese
2 eggs
40g oats or oat flour
½ tsp baking powder

Method
Blend all ingredients until smooth. Heat a non-stick pan and cook small pancakes for 2–3 minutes on each side until golden.

“These pancakes are naturally low in sugar and much higher in protein than traditional recipes,” Sarah explains. “They’re a great option for anyone who wants to enjoy Pancake Day without a sugar spike.”

A New Way to Celebrate Pancake Day
Nutritionists say Pancake Day is evolving, with more people looking for recipes that fit into their everyday routines.

“Pancakes don’t have to be reserved for one day a year,” Sarah says. “With a few simple ingredient swaps, they can become a regular, nutritious meal that still feels like a treat.”
