Abu Bakr Supermarket launches ‘Aisles of Support’ to help pensioners smile, chat and feel safe

Abu Bakr SupermarketAbu Bakr Supermarket is turning everyday shopping trips into meaningful moments of connection for older residents through a new initiative designed to support pensioners both practically and socially.

The Leeds head quartered Supermarket has launched “Aisles of Support”, across all its stores in Leeds and Batley. The programme is aimed at helping pensioners feel confident, welcome and safe while doing their weekly shop.

Staff across all Abu Bakr stores have been trained to engage with older customers on the shop floor, at the tills and inside the store’s Food 2 Go café — offering friendly conversation, guidance on affordable ingredients and simple meal ideas.

Managing director Hamza Hussain said the initiative builds on the supermarket’s community-first approach.

He believes initiatives like aisles of Support are increasingly important in tackling pensioner isolation across West Yorkshire.

Now rolled out across all Abu Bakr Supermarket super markets, the programme is helping ensure that shopping trips are not only practical, but also supportive and socially uplifting experiences for older residents.

“It’s about making sure every customer feels comfortable and supported,” he said. “Our staff are already on first-name terms with many regular customers — that’s simply how we operate.

“Through Aisles of Support, we’re helping people choose ingredients, plan simple meals, and, sometimes, just enjoy a chat and a cup of tea in our Food 2 Go cafe.

“By blending friendly service, practical guidance and the welcoming atmosphere of our Food 2 Go cafe, Abu Bakr Supermarket is showing how a local store can be more than just a place to shop — it can be a trusted neighbourhood hub.”

Many pensioners are managing household budgets on fixed incomes while trying to maintain balanced diets and independence. The initiative addresses these challenges by:

Highlighting affordable staples and everyday essentials, suggesting recipes, offering tips to reduce food waste, encourage balanced, nutritious meals and supporting independent shopping with confidence.

By combining practical advice with genuine social interaction, the supermarket aims to make shopping trips reassuring as well as affordable.

For some older residents, a visit to the supermarket may be one of the few regular opportunities to interact with others.

The in-store Food 2 Go cafe has become an important part of the programme, providing a warm, welcoming space where customers can sit down, enjoy a hot drink for just £1.00 and share conversation with staff and fellow shoppers.
