ALDI. Ballieston, Glasgow.
Aldi has once again been named the strongest-performing retailer for Scottish sourcing, with the National Farmers Union Scotland (NFUS) Mid-Year ShelfWatch report finding that 68 per cent of its own-label fresh produce is Scottish.
The figure is up from 40% during the same period in 2025, marking a significant increase in the number of local products reaching shelves. A further 30% of products are identified as British, bringing the total proportion of Aldi’s own-label fresh range produced in the UK to an impressive 98%.
Published on Tuesday 27 October, the annual report confirms Aldi as the biggest supporter of Scottish produce for the second year running, with the retailer performing strongly across categories including beef, lamb, chicken, eggs and fresh vegetables.
Aldi continues to stock the highest proportion of Scottish pork of any retailer at 40%, while 89% of its chicken is Scottish. Two-thirds (66%) of its vegetable lines are sourced from Scotland, an increase of 12% on last year, and this summer 82% of the soft fruit on its shelves was Scottish.
The supermarket also leads the way on dairy, with Scottish cheddar accounting for 78% of its own-label range, broadly unchanged since January and well ahead of other retailers.
Alan Leslie, buying director, Aldi Scotland, said: “We know Scottish shoppers want to buy local wherever they can, which is why we invest so heavily in sourcing from Scottish suppliers, and in clear labelling that shows customers exactly where their food comes from.
“Scottish farmers and producers are at the heart of our range, so it’s hugely encouraging to see that recognised once again by NFU Scotland. Almost seven in every ten own-label fresh products on our Scottish shelves now come from Scottish farms. This is the result of long-term partnerships with suppliers who produce some of the best food anywhere in the world.
“That matters all the more at a time when farmers and producers in Scotland and across the UK are facing rising costs, unpredictable weather and volatile markets. We believe retailers have a crucial role to play in supporting them, which is why we remain committed to working closely with our suppliers and with organisations like NFU Scotland so that we can keep filling our shelves with the very best Scottish food and drink.”
Andrew Connon, NFU Scotland President, said: “Aldi’s continued commitment to Scottish sourcing is welcome. This support for Scottish Prime pork is particularly significant: it means standing behind Scottish pig producers at a time of considerable pressure and offering consumers pork produced to world-leading standards. Having retailers like Aldi committed to buying Scottish pork helps provide a market for our producers giving them some much needed confidence for the future.
“Scottish farmers consistently deliver high-quality food, but fair returns and market confidence are essential. Retailers have a responsibility to support home-grown produce, and Aldi’s figures demonstrate leadership. Their continued backing gives Scottish farmers and growers the confidence to invest and maintain the food supply our country depends on.”
