Dunelm’s underperformance is a sign of the times, says GlobalData

Following today’s release of Dunelm’s figures for the 13 weeks ending 27 December 2025; Oliver Maddison, retail analyst at GlobalData, a leading intelligence and productivity platform, offers his view: “Dunelm underperformed relative to the lofty expectations it set in its Q1, seeing its Q2 sales grow by just 1.6% in the face of muted consumer confidence, leading it to reduce its full year profit before tax guidance to the lower end of its guided range (£214m-£227m). The period from Black Friday onwards proved particularly challenging, with Dunelm competing against high levels of discounting from competitors, which negatively impacted its guided profits despite its previously downplayed expectations for its H1 profitability. This spooked investors, with Dunelm’s share price falling by c.16% when markets opened, as investors sought alternatives less tied to diminished consumer confidence.

“Dunelm’s best performances were in lighting and its historic specialism of textiles, with consumers continuing to look to its trendy offering and accessible price points in anticipation of spending more time at home in winter to save money on going out. Nonetheless, Dunelm highlighted furniture availability as a key area for improvement, with potential sales likely lost to competitors such as IKEA and Next. In the pursuit of growth, Dunelm must better promote its broad ‘good-better-best’ price architecture to simultaneously hold onto financially pressed consumers looking to trade down, while also capitalising on premiumisation within the home market as spend continues to be driven by higher-income consumers at the likes of The Cotswold Company, which saw its sales grow by 16.6% in the 10 weeks ending 28 December.

“There is nonetheless room for cautious optimism that Dunelm will make the best of a bad situation, with the retailer reporting that the start of its Q3 is performing better than Q2, albeit on the back of discounts in its Winter Sale. The cold snap in January will also boost consumer desire for Dunelm’s specialism in cosy items, compared to the unseasonably mild December. The rollout of the retailer’s apps to both iOS and Android will also support its online growth, which will help Dunelm as consumers opt for home delivery rather than braving the cold.”
