Iceland: fans on five meals a day as new product launched for England v Mexico

IcelandEngland fans have officially become a nation of midnight munchers thanks to the football, with millions of supporters now eating up to five meals a day as late-night knockout fixtures turn normal routines upside down.

New research conducted by Iceland Foods has revealed the nation’s eating habits have been transformed by the tournament, with fans adding two entirely new meals into their day, including an early hours of the morning, ‘Second Supper’.

According to the data, almost half of Brits (43%) now admit to eating up to five meals a day, including a ‘Second Supper’, with 1 in 3 (39%) saying they’re consuming more food than normal simply because they’re staying awake for the matches.

Britain’s new ‘Second Supper’ craze has a runaway favourite meal too with more than half (51%)* of fans saying nothing beats a late-night curry, while cheering on England in the early hours.

Now Iceland is responding to the new craze by launching a brand-new £1 meal, designed specifically for fans watching England’s quarter final match up with Mexico.

The ‘Second Supper’ meal, a chicken curry with rice, has now been launched in selected stores, so fans can satisfy their fifth meal of the day cravings, with the product dubbed, ‘the perfect 1am meal’.

An Iceland Foods spokesperson said: “The nation’s sleep schedule might be in tatters, but its appetite has never been healthier. We’ve gone from three meals a day to five, and a new ‘Second Supper’ is now being had by millions of fans in the early hours of the morning.

“With England playing at 1am on Monday morning, we knew we had to act to satisfy the new trend and that’s why we’ve officially unveiled football fans’ perfect 1am meal, the ‘Second Supper’, a chicken curry with rice.”

According to Iceland, the tournament isn’t just changing eating habits, it’s also transforming shopping habits too.

Iceland says the final hour before stores close has become noticeably busier as supporters stock up for late kick-offs, while demand has also surged for the supermarket’s last available free home delivery slots as households prepare for marathon match nights.

Now, with England chasing glory, Iceland believes the ‘Second Supper’ could become Britain’s newest mealtime tradition, at least until the final whistle blows on Sunday 19 July.

Iceland’s ‘Second Supper’ is the latest addition to the £1 range of which Iceland is celebrating the 30th anniversary. The supermarket has cut or introduced the price of 750 products to just £1, extending one of the UK’s biggest value offers as household budgets remain under pressure.
