IGD Viewpoint Resilience Report for the Food system 2025

The IGD has released its annual Resilience Report for 2025, which focuses on the food system. This report follows last year’s publication, “A System Under Pressure,” where IGD identified ten long-term risks to the UK food system. This year’s report outlines that these risks continue to be the primary threats to the UK food system. In the report the IGD has reviewed key developments related to these threats over the past year.

Matthew Stoughton-Harris, resilience lead, states: “Just five years ago, as Covid and lockdowns hit, this nation witnessed the critical importance of food distribution networks to our society. Our report today shows that the risk of disruption to the UK’s food supply chain is materially increasing – whether that’s due to changing weather patterns or wider geopolitical issues. From the farmer to the supermarket, the UK food industry is doing its bit, seeking to build more resilience into the food system. However, the Government needs to play its part. It is crucial for the Government to make food system resilience a strategic priority, ensuring that we are better prepared and able to adapt to the many challenges impacting food safety and supply.   Food security must now be prioritised, to drive progress to a thriving food system.  The upcoming food strategy can be the start but must not be the end.”
