JD Sports’ performance reflects an increasingly saturated sportswear market, says GlobalData

Following today’s release of JD Sports’ figures for the Q2 ending 1 August 2026; Chloe Tedford-Jones, apparel analyst at GlobalData, a leading intelligence and productivity platform, offers her view:

“JD Sports’ performance in Q2 FY2026/27 saw a further deterioration compared to Q1, with organic sales slipping 1.3%, reflecting a combination of weak consumer demand, severe pricing pressure, and structural supply issues from major brand partners. Reflecting these headwinds, the group has revised its FY2026/27 guidance, now expecting profit before tax and adjusting items in the range of £700m-£800m, down from £750m-£850m, causing its share price to fall c.10% in early trading. The group’s performance highlights a maturing sportswear market, exposing the limits of using capital-heavy store expansion to mask organic stagnation.

“Organic growth was mixed across the group’s key fascias. The JD segment saw organic sales fall 0.3% while l-f-l sales fell 2.8%, largely due to low UK footfall and demonstrating that new store openings helped to offset declines in established locations.

“The retailer’s performance is heavily impacted by its over-reliance on Nike, which has continued to struggle due to an innovation drought in footwear. While JD Sports now also stocks surging alternative brands like On and Hoka, they lack the volumes required to offset this heritage deficit. To reverse underlying volume declines, JD Sports must move faster than its physical pipeline currently allows, building sharper agility with brands to capture rapidly changing trends.

“Complementary Athleisure suffered from high promotional activity and consumer fatigue, posting an organic decline of 8.0%. The Sporting Goods & Outdoor segment was the group’s star performer, posting organic growth of 6.4%, with l-f-l sales increasing 5.0%, driven by resilient demand for technical products.

“Asia Pacific was JD Sports’ best-performing region in Q2 FY2026/27, with l-f-l sales growing 1.4% and organic sales rising 10.2%, driven by sustained store expansion. In Europe, l-f-l sales fell 2.7% while organic sales dipped 0.4%, as the region suffered from heavy discounting. In North America, l-f-l sales dropped 6.8% and organic sales declined 4.5% due to delayed Back-to-School shopping and reduced high-premium footwear launches. The UK presented a mixed result, with l-f-l sales up 0.8% but organic sales down 0.2%, reflecting a challenging market that made scaling volume difficult.”
