Landsec, owner of one of the UK’s leading retail and leisure portfolios, has unveiled a giant recreation of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers at Westgate Oxford, continuing its commitment to bring arts and culture to the local communities served by its retail destinations.
Created in collaboration with the National Gallery and Global Street Art, the mural marks the first Murals reMastered installation outside London. It is the latest example of Landsec’s strategy of making arts and culture more accessible through locally relevant experiences -giving people more reasons to visit, spend time at and return to its destinations.
Chosen to reflect Oxford’s botanical heritage as home to the UK’s oldest botanic garden, the installation is being supported by a week of activity across Westgate Oxford, with retailers and hospitality operators including The LEGO® Store, Freddie’s Flowers and roof terrace bar Victors taking part.
The activation builds on a series of cultural moments Landsec has brought to life across its retail portfolio, each tailored to the destination and its local community.
Most recently at Buchanan Galleries in Glasgow, a ‘Twinned in Tartan’ activation with local kiltmaker Slanj celebrated the unexpected bond between Scotland fans and World Cup host city Boston by creating a new bespoke tartan print.
Ben Padley, Group Head of Consumer at Landsec, said: “The best retail destinations offer something more than shopping alone. By making art and culture more accessible and creating experiences with strong local connections, we can give people new and compelling reasons to visit.
“The strongest experiences feel true to their setting. Whether celebrating local icons or recreating some of the world’s most recognisable artworks, each experience we deliver is rooted in the character of the destination – enriching the day out for visitors and creating more opportunities for the brands that partner with us.”
