M&S lowers prices of over 65 shopping list essentials as part of £30m investment to help more families eat well for less

M&SWith a continued focus on families, M&S Food has invested over £30 million to drop the prices of weekly shop essentials this year. Today’s investment sees over 65 products lower in price in its Remarksable Value, Dropped & Locked and Bigger Pack, Better Value ranges while maintaining M&S quality customers know and trust. Unlike other value ranges this is not ‘entry tier’ food with reduced quality to make it cheaper, this is the same M&S high quality food with a lower price. This is made possible because M&S has invested to bring the price down with long-term supplier partnerships through its own brand approach.

M&S is reducing the prices of every one of its fresh salmon fillets – the UK’s favourite fish – to support families looking to eat well for less. Independent consumer insight shows that 68% of families say they would eat or cook with salmon more if it was more affordable and one in five families find it hard to get enough Omega 3.

M&S exclusive Caledonian Gold salmon is the highest quality and the only salmon by a national retailer to make up a weekly requirement of Omega 3 in just one serving. The price for two salmon fillets is now £4.95, reduced from £5.50. M&S has reduced the price of ten fresh salmon products, including the larger family four pack, down from £10.75 to £9.50. Today’s investment brings M&S salmon in line with market prices in its Remarksable Value range, which are benchmarked to other competitors, whilst being standout for their quality.

Other protein staples such as British Lean Beef Mince 12%, £4.50 and Free-Range Mixed Size Eggs 6 Pack, £1.30, to store cupboard and freezer family staples like Tomato Ketchup, 95p and French Fries 1.5kg, £2.50 now have new lower, everyday value pricing.

These changes are all part of its wider strategy to bring the best quality food to customers, at the best price possible. M&S has been investing consistently in its Remarksable Value range from veg staples to 5% Beef Mince and more products set to be added over the summer months. The range now offers more than 140 everyday family favourites.

Managing director of M&S Food, Alex Freudmann, said: “As we double the size of our Food business, we are continuing to invest in quality and price to bring the best food to our customers. These price reductions across key family favourites like salmon, eggs and veg are all part of our commitment to help our customers to eat great tasting food every day, without compromise. This is another step on our transformation journey as we reinvest for growth.”

Investments in prices of staples are supporting perceptions of value at M&S amongst families which have improved by +10%pts in the last 2 years**, as families are now more likely than ever to consider shopping at M&S Food***.
