Regatta Great Outdoors supports Devon Environment Foundation (DEF) with funding for Save Our Seagrass project

The Regatta Foundation is proud to be extending their partnership with The Conservation Collective. As true outdoor enthusiasts, Regatta Great Outdoors is passionate about supporting environmental foundations, working to protect the natural world.

The Conservation Collective is a network of local environment foundations based across the world funding grassroots projects dedicated to preserving, protecting, and regenerating biodiverse ecosystems.

This year, Regatta Great Outdoors will be supporting the Devon Environment Foundation (DEF), where funding will be allocated to the Wild Planet Trust: Save Our Seagrass project.

Seagrass is a vital marine habitat. It absorbs carbon dioxide 35 times faster than a tropical rainforest and protects coastal communities by stabilising sediments via its dense root systems. Despite this, a recent study showed that over 90% of seagrass meadows in the UK have been damaged in the last 100 years.

The Save Our Seagrass project aims to protect seagrass meadows through a holistic strategy of ecological monitoring, physical protection, and community engagement. DEF funding will enable Save our Seagrass to gain further understanding of the health of Torbay’s seagrass meadows, coupled with an awareness campaign to highlight the problems seagrass faces to hopefully reduce local human impact.

It aims to conserve and recover local seagrass meadows in Torbay by promoting seagrass-friendly moorings and championing marine issues with coastal businesses.

A new ‘Seagrass Champions’ initiative will encourage tourism businesses to make behavioral change pledges and empower the local community to take action to protect its marine environment.

“We’re excited to be partnering with Regatta to enable this multi-faceted project to protect and restore local seagrass meadows, while empowering local businesses and the wider community with tangible ways to look after their local marine environment,” said Amanda Keetley, executive director, DEF.

Regatta Great Outdoors is passionate about encouraging everyone to spend time in nature and look forward to working alongside The Conversation Collective.
