The Macallan unveils the Carta Nautica Collection

Reading Time: 4 mins read

The Macallan The Macallan has launched the Carta Nautica Collection, an exceptional new collection of single malt Scotch whiskies that captures the spirit of exploration through a transatlantic journey of oak, craft and time.

Derived from the Spanish term for ‘nautical chart’, Carta Nautica tells the story of a purposeful passage, tracing the voyage of The Macallan’s oak staves and casks across the Atlantic Ocean, from North America to Jerez de la Frontera and Scotland, before finally arriving at The Macallan Estate. Along the way, each destination leaves its mark on the character of the whisky, shaping a collection that reflects a crafted culmination of influences from different continents and cultures.

Guided by The Macallan’s Six Pillars, the collection captures a spirit of exploration and refinement, where tradition meets discovery. Set within a rich, oceanic world, the whiskies draw on a symbolic narrative of guidance and discovery, reflecting both the physical journey of the casks and The Macallan’s enduring pursuit of mastery.

Crafted by The Macallan’s Whisky Mastery Team, each whisky in the Carta Nautica Collection undergoes an anomalous maturation journey. Whilst The Macallan’s traditional approach to whisky making relies heavily on aging in sherry seasoned casks – or using ex-bourbon casks followed by a sherry seasoned cask finish – the curation of this collection adopts a unique process.

First, a double maturation in sherry seasoned oak casks from Jerez de la Frontera, before being transferred into casks that previously held bourbon from North America. The unique maturation enhances depth, richness and complexity, while introducing brightness and balance, resulting in whiskies that are both evocative of their journey and unmistakably The Macallan.

The journey concludes at The Macallan Estate, beside the River Spey, where time and craftsmanship unify influences gathered across continents as the whisky matures in its journeyed casks. This approach brings together unexpected influences to create a collection of distinctive and sophisticated expressions.

The Macallan Carta Nautica Distilled in 1987

A rare and exceptional expression, The Macallan Carta Nautica Distilled in 1987 is inspired by the epic Atlantic journeys that have shaped The Macallan’s oak for more than two centuries.

The first in a new series of vintage releases, this single malt scotch whisky was distilled in 1987 and matured over 38 years, beginning its journey in the finest oak casks seasoned with sherry wine from Jerez de la Frontera before being transferred into casks that previously held bourbon from North America, creating an expression defined by an extraordinary maturation journey.

The whisky’s packaging is also complemented by artwork from American artist Amy Genser, inspired by the natural forms and rhythms of the ocean that underpin the Collection.

Bottled at 45.2% ABV, notes of creamy vanilla and caramelised peach are complemented by antique oak and subtle floral elegance, while hints of nectarine, charred pineapple and soft leather unfold across the palate. The finish is long and refined, with wood spice and sultanas leaving a lasting impression of balance and sophistication.

The Macallan Carta Nautica 20 Years Old (Global Travel Retail Exclusive)

The Macallan Carta Nautica 20 Years Old is an expressive legacy of both travel and time. Shaped by two continents and the ocean that connects them, this whisky is created from an anomalous selection of oak casks. Every drop has been matured in and influenced by the rich depth of sherry seasoned oak casks from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, before being moved into casks that previously held bourbon from America to further mature, creating a character that speaks to craft and curiosity

The whisky is further brought to life through artwork by Genser unique to this expression, whose distinctive paper-based works draw inspiration from the movement of water and the organic forms found in nature. Through intricate layers of colour, texture and pattern, her work provides a visual interpretation of the ocean’s wonders, extending the Carta Nautica story beyond the label and offering a deeper expression of the Collection’s spirit of exploration and discovery.

Bottled at 42% ABV, vibrant orange peel and creamy vanilla are joined on the nose by tropical notes of charred pineapple and juicy mango, alongside softer hints of apricot conserve. The palate unfolds with layers of sweetness, from peach tea and caramelised figs to whispers of leather and chocolate orange. A lingering finish of dried tropical fruits, caramel and toasted oak spice brings the journey to a smooth and satisfying close.

Euan Kennedy, Lead Whisky Maker at The Macallan, commented: “The Carta Nautica Collection is a celebration of journey and transformation. By bringing together casks shaped by different continents and climates, we have created a selection of whiskies that express both contrast and harmony. Each element has been carefully guided to reveal a character that is complex, balanced and deeply connected to its origins.”

Jaume Ferras, creative director at The Macallan, added: “At The Macallan, creativity is central to how we bring our stories to life. The Carta Nautica Collection brings together craftsmanship, imagination and exploration, expressing the extraordinary journey behind the whisky and the mastery that shapes it. It reflects our enduring curiosity to push boundaries, while remaining true to the heritage and craftsmanship that define The Macallan.”

The Macallan Carta Nautica Distilled in 1987 is a limited release and will be available through The Macallan Estate Boutique and other The Macallan Boutiques globally from 28th September, subject to availability and location.

The Macallan Carta Nautica 20 Years Old will be available exclusively in Singapore Changi Airport Lotte Duty Free shops from 28th September and globally at The Macallan Airport Boutiques, including The Macallan Boutique in London Heathrow Terminal 5 and key airports around the world from 19th October onwards at $800 / €678 / £593.
