Too Good To Go and Morrisons reveal UK’s summer salad and bread buns food waste problem – and a tasty way to turn it around

As the days get longer and the weather gets warmer, Too Good To Go – the world’s largest marketplace for surplus food – reveals some shocking new insights into the UK’s summer food habits. While Brits embrace fresher foods for garden gatherings and last-minute picnics, from seasonal staples to picky bits, there’s a hidden cost behind the summer spread: food waste.

Research from Too Good To Go reveals Brits are set to waste significant amounts of food this summer season. One in five (20%) will throw away salads, 12% will chuck out vegetables like peppers, onions, mushrooms, and an alarming 9 million bread buns are destined for the bin during the warmer months.

However, 30% of Brits are motivated to reduce food waste in the future and luckily, collecting a Morrisons Surprise Bag through the Too Good To Go app is a great way to rescue surplus food and get creative with delicious dishes, perfect for al-fresco dining and sunny-day snacking. Morrisons Surprise Bags are packed with delicious surplus food from the supermarket, café, or Market Kitchen, such as fruit, veg, baked goods and more, all at a reduced price. Each Surprise Bag contains quality food worth at least £10 at retail value, nearing its sell-by date that would otherwise go to waste – a win for your wallet and the planet!

Since launching its partnership with Too Good To Go in 2019, Morrisons has expanded the initiative to nearly 500 supermarkets across the UK, saving an incredible three million Surprise Bags of food from going to waste. That’s the carbon equivalent of 1,408 flights around the world!

To mark this impressive milestone, Morrisons and Too Good To Go are launching an exciting competition. Users who save a Surprise Bag filled with Morrisons goodies between 22nd May and 12th June will have a chance to win £250 worth of Morrisons More Points and a Yeti Roadie 15 Cool Box – perfectly fit BBQ and al-fresco dining season.

Sophie Trueman, country director UK & I, Too Good To Go, said: “We are incredibly proud to have reached the milestone of three million Surprise Bags saved in partnership with Morrisons. Every Surprise Bag saved means good food enjoyed instead of wasted – and that’s a win for both people and the planet. Tackling food waste is only possible through strong, long-term partnerships like this one, and together we’re making real progress towards a more sustainable food system. That’s why we’re excited to launch the Too Good To Go/Morrisons competition as a thank you and to inspire even more people to get involved in the fight against food waste.

Andrew Edlin, senior corporate sustainability manager of Morrisons, said: “We’re proud to have helped save three million ‘Surprise Bags’ through our partnership with Too Good To Go, turning surplus food into value for our customers and reducing waste at the same time. To celebrate this milestone and give something back, we’ve launched a special competition to thank our customers and encourage even more people to get involved in the fight against food waste.”

To enter, all you have to do is follow three simple steps:

1.     Download the Too Good To Go app and create an account

2.     Save one Morrisons Surprise Bag between 22nd May and 12th June 2025
