Amex research: Majority of small business leaders believe better personal wellbeing positively impacts business performance

Amex Three quarters (75%) of SME leaders believe that the better they feel, the more successful their business is, according to findings from American Express’ latest Business Barometer survey.

The annual research surveyed 1,000 senior decision makers at UK micro, small and medium-sized businesses. It found the majority recognise the professional benefits of improved wellbeing; over four-fifths (82%) agree they perform better at work when they are mentally and physically healthy, and two-thirds (67%) recognise they need a positive work-life balance to be a good leader or manager. Some of the main professional benefits of a better work-life balance cited by respondents are greater productivity, improved focus, and better decision making.

The findings indicate a shift towards a more balanced approach to the challenges of running a business. Over three-quarters (77%) of SME leaders say they currently have a good work-life balance – up from 62% in 2024. Yet a significant proportion still report challenges that reflect the demands of running a small business – over a quarter (28%) say they find it difficult to step away from overseeing day-to-day business activity.

Ruchi Sharma, Vice President, UK Commercial at American Express, said: “Our research shows that small business leaders recognise that sustainable success starts with looking after themselves. Meaningful time away from day-to-day pressures is essential so they can switch off, recharge and find fulfilment outside of work. Our focus is on supporting entrepreneurs as they grow their business, and with rewards earned on everyday spending that give them more choice in how they enjoy downtime.”

Turning everyday business spending into rewards

From today, American Express has launched one of its largest Welcome Bonuses that gives new Cardmembers applying for American Express® Business Platinum and Gold Cards the ability to earn additional Membership Rewards® points.

Until 14 October 2025, applicants approved for a Business Gold Card can earn up to 60,000 Membership Rewards points when they spend £6,000 in the first three months. Those approved for a Business Platinum Card can earn up to 120,000 Membership Rewards points when they spend £12,000 in the first three months.

A major new advertising campaign showcases how small business owners can boost their business by earning Membership Rewards points through everyday spending on their Amex Business Card. Cardmembers can redeem points for travel or gift cards, to pay their bill, or reinvest in their business. For example, 120,000 Membership Rewards points can be used to purchase £600 worth of gift cards across a mix of categories, including dining, experiences, health and wellness brands.
