Move over meal deals: the Cornish Pasty emerges as the UK’s second favourite lunch choice

It’s official, the Cornish Pasty has overtaken the generic “Meal Deal” to become the UK’s second favourite quick lunch. In a comprehensive study of over 4,000 Brits, commissioned by The Cornish Company, the data reveals that almost a third (29%) prefer a pasty at lunch, more than double the popularity of the standard pre-packaged meal deal (12%), while a homemade sandwich or wrap won at 48%.

The news comes as Brits prepare to celebrate Cornish Pasty Week, which runs from February 23rd to March 1st. This is particularly evident in London, where 60% now class the Cornish Pasty as a ‘National British Icon’ rather than just a regional snack.

The study also highlights a shift in how we consume our food on the go. With 71% of those eating while walking admitting to utilising their ‘paper bag shield’, keeping the pasty wrapped until the very last bite to avoid mess during a busy commute.

When it comes to flavours, a traditional steak pasty remains the undisputed favourite across the country, with a whopping 61% of votes, compared to the next option of cheese and onion at 11%. However, younger demographics have a growing appetite for innovation, naming ‘Christmas Dinner’ (26%) and ‘Full English Breakfast’ (20%) as the top ‘dream fillings’ they would like to see in a crust.

Tom Woodley, managing director & co-founder at The Cornish Company, says: “With National Pasty Day just days away, these results confirm what we’ve long suspected: the Cornish Pasty has graduated from a treat to a genuine powerhouse of the British lunch hour.

Our research shows that people are tired of the ‘same old’ soggy sandwich; they want lunch with real heritage and heart. Whether it’s through our traditional hand-crimped classics or our expanded gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan hampers, we are making

the pasty accessible to everyone. It’s a proud moment to see this Cornish staple back in the top tier of British culture, and we’re thrilled to be leading that charge from our home in Cornwall.”

With next-day delivery available, hampers from The Cornish Company are the perfect way to celebrate Cornish Pasty Week!
