Swedish sports retailer Stadium partners with Exotec to deploy Skypod system in Norrköping warehouse

Stadium, one of the Nordic region’s leading sports retail chains, has today announced its investment in a new automated logistics centre in Norrköping, Sweden. The facility will be equipped with Exotec’s Skypod system and will be the company’s first wholly owned distribution hub.

The new facility marks a major milestone for Stadium. After decades of outsourced logistics, the company recognised the need for a more efficient supply of goods to stores, and greater control over its supply chain.

Exotec’s Skypod system will be at the heart of the new warehouse, hosting over 240 autonomous robots that move in three dimensions, horizontally and vertically up to a height of 12 metres. The system is a complete end-to-end integration that incorporates logistics. With more than 170,000 storage locations, Stadium’s automated logistics centre will have the capacity to handle both large order peaks and long-term company growth.

Daniel Johansson, supply chain director at Stadium, said: “We needed a solution that gives us full control over our store logistics and is flexible enough to grow with us. With Exotec’s Skypod system, we can streamline deliveries to our stores and scale up capacity as the business grows.”

Construction of the centre is due to start in 2026 and represents a multi-million-pound investment for Stadium. The system is planned to be fully operational in the first quarter of 2028. Langebæk, one of Scandinavia’s leading management consultancies in supply chain management, has acted as a consultant since the project’s inception and is supporting Stadium in close collaboration with Exotec.

Stadium is Exotec’s first Swedish customer, representing a flagship project that underlines the robotics company’s ambitions in the Nordic market.

Andreas Stöckl, head of Exotec’s Nordic operations, added: “Stadium is a fantastic first Swedish customer project for us. It shows that our solution is ideal for Nordic companies that want to combine high flexibility with energy-efficient and scalable automation. We look forward to a long-term collaboration and to supporting Stadium in their continued growth.”

“Exotec’s Skypod system stands out for its low energy consumption – up to five times lower than traditional storage systems with stacker cranes – as well as its quick installation and the option to hire extra robots during periods of high demand. Since 2023, the system’s carbon footprint has been reduced by 30 per cent, partly through lighter racks and boxes made from recycled plastic.”
