Premier Foods strengthens animal welfare performance in latest global BBFAW benchmark

The Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare (BBFAW), the global measure of company performance on farm animal welfare, has recognised Premier Foods as a top global performer for the third consecutive year.

Premier Foods, one of the UK’s leading food manufacturers, has been named among a select group of just four companies to achieve ‘Tier 2’ status, the highest level reached by the businesses included in this year’s benchmark. It stands alongside Waitrose, Marks & Spencer and Greggs in receiving this recognition, having improved its overall score from 68 in 2025, to 73 this year.

This distinction is awarded to companies that have embedded farm animal welfare at the heart of their business strategy, and have successfully achieved between 62% and 80% across all BBFAW assessment criteria.

Premier Foods has also retained a ‘B’ Impact Rating for the second year running, demonstrating the meaningful welfare improvements the business is making for animals within its own operations and across the supply chain. BBFAW highlighted Premier Foods’ membership of the Better Chicken Commitment as a key strength. The company also works closely with suppliers such as Rodda’s, a key dairy supplier to the Ambrosia creamery in Lifton, Devon, where milk from family-run farms supports traceability and high welfare standards, with a strong focus on low-stress systems, herd health and wellbeing.

Gareth Pullan, director of procurement at Premier Foods, said: “We’re proud to be recognised once again by the BBFAW as a leading global performer, and to see further progress reflected in our improved score this year. Retaining our Tier 2 status for a third consecutive year demonstrates the consistent focus we’ve placed on embedding strong animal welfare standards across our business.

This recognition reflects the collaborative effort of our teams and suppliers, and the importance we place on long-term partnerships that support high welfare outcomes.

Guided by our Enriching Life Plan, we remain committed to working closely with all teams across our supply chain to drive positive change and deliver against our shared ambitions.”

The BBFAW measured 149 global food companies across a set of rigorous benchmarks including animal welfare management, policy commitment, performance and disclosure, ranking each business from tiers one to six.
