Gen Z prefer free office coffee to post-work drinks, Philips finds

While Retail Times tests the Phillips Café Aromis 8000 Series

PhilipsWorkers aged 18-24 find free coffee in the office more enticing than a pint with colleagues, a new study has revealed.

Almost one in five Gen Z employees (19%) said that coffee breaks with colleagues were the most attractive perk when working in a physical office, as long as it’s free. That’s almost four times more than the number of Gen Z (5%) who say post-work drinks are a top perk.

Data from coffee experts at Philips has also revealed that Gen Z are the most likely to use coffee as a ‘concentration aid’ during the working day, with over a quarter (26%) of 18-24 year olds saying it helps them focus on work.

However, when working from home and trading the office environment for kitchen tables and spare bedrooms, many young workers struggle without their daily rituals.

One in seven (14%) said they regularly forget to take breaks when working remotely, with 11% drank less coffee because they no longer had access to a decent coffee machine.

The absence of office coffee culture can even have an  effect on morale, with over 1 in 10 (14%) Gen Z saying they feel lonely working from home, and a further 17% saying they don’t speak to a single other person on a work from home day.

Charley Parnell, coffee expert at Philips, said: “People often think they’ll miss the big moments of office life most, such as work socials or after-work drinks. But our research suggests it’s often the smaller daily rituals that have the biggest impact.

“As the working from home debate continues, it’s clear that many have underestimated the power of a simple cup of coffee – for both its emotional impact and team building qualities in a workplace.”

For those looking to improve their at home coffee experience, the Philips Baristina is the perfect choice, bringing the quality and taste of freshly ground beans to the small footprint and convenience of pod coffee machines.

Available from John Lewis and Currys in both black and white for £299.99, the Baristina can brew cafe quality coffee to rival the expensive office machine in just 60 seconds.

Retail Times review

The Philips Café Aromis 8000 series is a stylish and compact coffee maker that really does allow you to make café quality coffee at home. The neat footprint means it takes up minimal space on my kitchen worktop and blends in with my chrome kitchen furniture and accessories.

I can’t believe the range of hot and cold drinks it enables you to make at home. It provides a real barista-style experience and extensive menu in your own kitchen. We are making espressos and iced lattes on repeat! The taste is just fantastic.

We have been using it with our favourite Hard Lines coffee beans and it’s a winning combination. You can choose how fine or coarse you would like to grind your beans, which is a great feature.

We especially love the personalisation that the machine provides and the ability to set up user profiles at the touch of a button, so you can guarantee you have your favourite brew each time. The barista assistant is also an innovative feature and a neat tool, which lets you adjust settings to suit your exact taste.

The silent brew technology means the coffee maker is quiet, while the parts are easy to clean.
