Barbour reimagines its unique tartan heritage for AW26

Barbour

The AW26 collection celebrates Barbour’s original and authentic tartans, drawing on the heritage that laid the foundations for one of Britain’s most recognised family-owned brands.

Today, tartan remains one of the company’s most recognisable design codes and for AW26, Barbour continues the evolution through two new reimagined seasonal tartans: Birchwood Tartan and Shadow Tartan.

Shadow Classic Tartan for AW26 is an evolution of the brand’s Classic Tartan, inspired by the autumnal tones of the Scottish landscape where the Barbour family story began.

The collection spans a full wardrobe of clothing, outerwear and accessories for menswear and womenswear, with tartan reimagined through scale and proportion across the range. Meanwhile, Barbour’s Icons in Tartan brings the family sett to the outside of some of the brand’s most iconic silhouettes for the first time.

Barbour’s exclusive family tartans are a longstanding symbol of the brand’s Scottish roots and one of its most authentic signatures. Inspired by the natural tones of the British countryside, the patterns are a defining thread through the brand’s history. AW26 is a natural continuation of that story and builds on the success of the tartan campaign first launched in AW25.

Shadow Tartan

This season, the brand introduces Shadow Classic Tartan – an evolution of the iconic Classic Tartan in an understated palette. Autumnal shades of Olive and Rustic are lifted by Fig, Cranberry and Tan, deepening into Black and Light Trench as the season turns, echoing the Scottish landscape under low winter light.

Tartan is woven throughout the range of menswear and womenswear, from bold all-over checks and jacquard knits to the cord trims, linings and cuff facings that bring quieter detail. The collection moves from double-faced wool overshirts to brushed-cotton check shirts, with heritage forms reworked through subtle detailing and softened shapes. As the season deepens, tactile outer layers and delicate printed chiffons carry Barbour’s countryside roots through every piece, while outerwear extends the tartan across quilted overshirt jackets, baffle-quilted puffers and gilets, and a Moons wool take on the Classic Bedale Jacket.

Icons in Tartan

Over more than 130 years of the family business, certain names have become famous — from the 1969 Durham to the 2011 Ashby, these are the jackets that have echoed across the fields. This season Barbour turns them inside out. The tartan once tucked discreetly into a lining to disguise the evidence of a day outdoors now takes centre stage on the outside of the wax, drawing on both Shadow Classic and Classic Tartan across the brand’s most iconic silhouettes.

The Beaufort is refined with a contrast cord collar and a Classic Tartan lining that plays with scale, while the cropped Liddesdale brings together a patchwork of Shadow Classic and Classic Tartan with oversized patch pockets and a relaxed fit. The Bedale, Spey, Ashby and Durham each carry the tartan in their own way, from large-scale waxed panels to needlecord trims and bias-cut linings. Across the icons, waxed-cotton bodies and panelled tartan bring fresh character to the shapes that have defined the brand.

Timeless and understated, the AW26 Collection is a celebration of the family sett, the landscape that inspired it, and the commitment to craftsmanship carried through every Barbour generation.

Birchwood Tartan

Birchwood Tartan for Autumn Winter 2026 is a new seasonal interpretation of the brand’s authentic family Dress Tartan sett. Inspired by the changing colours of native Scottish woodlands, Birchwood Tartan combines camel and navy tones with softer blue and neutral accents. The collection spans menswear and womenswear, appearing across outerwear, shirting, knitwear and everyday layering pieces.

Across the womenswear collection, Birchwood Tartan is presented through a palette of Dark Navy, Mist, Frosted Heather and Cloud. The tartan features across showerproof outerwear, Oxford shirts, tailored trousers and knitwear designed for transitional dressing.
