Columbia Hike Society Summer Residency offers a different pace in the heart of Chamonix

Over the course of a week, the Columbia Hike Society Summer Residency welcomed hikers, hike leaders, ambassadors of the Columbia Hike Society, and outdoor enthusiasts to a mountain chalet dedicated to exploration, creativity, and community. Through a curated programme of guided hikes, photography workshops, mindfulness sessions, and informal gatherings, participants experienced the mountains beyond the notion of performance.

Columbia Hike Society Summer Residency Set against the backdrop of one of the busiest weeks of the mountain season, the Summer Residency created a space where guests could slow down, reconnect with nature, and embrace a more intentional outdoor experience. Activities such as Frame of Mind, Breathe In, and the daily Hike Sessions encouraged curiosity, reflection, and human connection, while the chalet became a welcoming hub for conversation and shared experiences.

“The Summer Residency was a real contrast to the buzz of Chamonix during UTMB. At the chalet, it felt like being in a family home, surrounded by people we already knew and others we got to discover along the way. What I particularly loved was that everyone brought their own personality and unique way of experiencing the outdoors. This diversity is what made the experience so special, creating a wonderful group dynamic and, above all, so much joy in being together. We created truly lasting memories,” Rose, hike leader, Pyrenees.

“With the Summer Residency, we wanted to create a space where people could experience the mountains differently. The week was built around hiking, community, creativity, and well-being, all values that have been at the heart of Columbia for decades. Seeing participants embrace that slower pace and connect with each other and the environment confirmed that there is a real appetite for these kinds of outdoor experiences,” Claire Neuville, marketing manager France.

“The Columbia chalet and the daily hikes were a true refuge amidst the whirlwind of UTMB. They created space to breathe, reconnect deeply with nature, and meet new people. More importantly, they showed that everyone has a place in Chamonix, regardless of their pace,” Mathilde, hike leader, Paris.

Columbia Hike Society Summer Residency teamThe initiative reflected Columbia’s long-standing hiking heritage and the spirit of the Columbia Hike Society: fostering meaningful outdoor experiences and celebrating the simple pleasure of spending time in the mountains. Throughout the week, the residency demonstrated that some of the most memorable mountain moments are not necessarily about achievement, but about discovery, connection, and taking the time to appreciate the journey.
