Boots Hearingcare brings back hearing test awareness month

Boots Hearingcare has brought back The Great Big Hearing Test for 2026, as audiologists warn millions of people across the UK may be unknowingly withdrawing from conversations, social events and everyday interactions due to undiagnosed hearing loss.

The festive period often acts as a pressure test for hearing health. Busy environments, overlapping conversations and background noise can expose challenges that are easier to mask during quieter routines, prompting experts to call on businesses, employers and healthcare stakeholders to help normalise hearing checks as part of preventative wellbeing.

New research shows that 64% of people with hearing loss find social gatherings more difficult during Christmas¹, reinforcing concerns that communication difficulties are frequently misattributed to tiredness, distraction or stress, rather than changes in hearing.

According to Boots Hearingcare audiologist Kayleigh Waters, these patterns of withdrawal often go unnoticed for years.

“These signs might have been particularly prevalent in group settings like Christmas dinners or during family games. This could manifest as withdrawing from conversations, becoming quieter than usual, or frequently asking people to repeat themselves. Many people don’t realise that these are classic signs of hearing loss as they can be easily mistaken for tiredness or distraction.”

Despite these early warning signs, people in the UK wait an average of four years before seeking support for hearing concerns. More than one in five delay action for between five and 10 years, while one in six wait over a decade, increasing the potential impact on confidence, relationships and long-term wellbeing.

Research continues to highlight wider implications, including links between untreated hearing loss and cognitive decline. Early intervention, including hearing tests and appropriate treatment, has been shown to help mitigate these risks and improve quality of life.

January has become a key moment for hearing health awareness, as individuals notice issues with their hearing over the festive period and reassess their wellbeing priorities for the year ahead. Hearing tests typically take just 15 minutes, are non-invasive, and can play a critical role in early detection. In fact, 76% of people who have their hearing tested and treated report improvements in communication, confidence and overall wellbeing.

The Great Big Hearing Test aims to drive awareness, reduce stigma and encourage proactive action on hearing health in 2026, positioning hearing checks as a routine part of preventative care rather than a reactive measure.

This January, The Great Big Hearing Test is encouraging anyone who struggled to hear over Christmas to take the step towards better hearing. Book a free hearing test today at https://www.bootshearingcare.com/book/
