Boots is expanding its range of healthcare services with the launch of a new Chest Infection Service*, giving customers greater access to healthcare support on the high street.
Chest infections are common, especially after a cold or flu. Typically, symptoms include a persistent cough, breathlessness, chest pain or tightness and coughing up thick mucus. They are often heightened in the winter season, as respiratory infections become increasingly common.
The private service is available in over 90 Boots stores across the UK for those aged 16 and over. During the 20-minute appointment, an independent prescribing pharmacist will assess symptoms, provide advice and discuss available treatment options, which may include over the counter medication and a course of antibiotics, if appropriate.
Claire Nevinson, superintendent pharmacist at Boots, said: “Chest infections are particularly common during the colder months and can leave people feeling unwell and unsure about the best course of action. Our new Chest Infection Service provides customers with convenient access to advice, support and treatment right on the high street.”
Customers can book online at boots.com and pay in-store. Consultations will take place in a private Boots consultation room and cost £25, with any prescribed medication or over-the-counter treatments charged separately.
Claire also answers commonly asked questions on chest infections and how to spot them:
How do I know if I have a chest infection or just suffering from cold and flu?
“A chest infection is an infection of the lungs or large airways and they often follow a cold or flu, therefore symptoms can be similar. Symptoms of a chest infection may include a chesty cough with coloured mucus, wheezing and shortness of breath, chest discomfort, a high temperature, headaches, aching muscles and tiredness.
“Symptoms can be unpleasant, but they usually clear up on their own in seven to ten days, though coughing can last up to three weeks. Speak to a GP if the cough persists longer than 3 weeks or you a coughing up blood”
How can I best treat a chest infection?
“If you have a chest infection, there are things you can do to ease the symptoms. These include getting plenty of rest, staying hydrated, having a healthy balanced diet, raising your head whilst sleeping or using extra pillows to make breathing easier.
“If symptoms persist and you’ve had a cough for more than three weeks or you’re coughing up blood, seek medical attention from a GP. ”
Who’s most at risk of chest infections?
“Certain groups of people have a higher risk of developing serious chest infections, including babies and young children, elderly people, pregnant women, people who smoke, people with long-term respiratory conditions like asthma, and those with a weakened immune system.”
This launch further expands the broad range of healthcare services available through Boots, both privately and on behalf of the NHS, which includes COVID*, flu* and meningitis B* vaccinations, giving customers easier access to advice and care.
