In celebration of National Biscuit Day (29th May), new original research has revealed the nation’s best biscuits and bizarre nibbling habits.
The Great British Biscuit Audit by McVitie’s saw 2,000 British adults polled, and revealed that Chocolate Digestives once again take the crown as the UK’s favourite biscuit (36%), followed by Shortbread (34%) and Custard Creams (21%). However, only a small portion (14%) actually enjoy Chocolate Digestives the “correct” way – chocolate side down – further continuing the debate about the best way to savour this classic treat that was sparked last month by Anthony Coulson, general manager at the McVitie’s Stockport factory.
Londoners were unveiled as the ultimate covert biscuit eaters, with 29% confessing to hiding their biscuit stash and a fifth (20%) admitting to storing them in their underwear drawers – other popular secret spots include bedside tables (37%) and wardrobes (28%).
Te biggest biscuit ‘ick’, with 15% of Brits agreeing, is when someone leaves half a biscuit uneaten, followed closely by 14% who are put off when someone eats an entire packet in one go.
Whilst McVitie’s biscuits have been enjoyed both in and out of the home for decades – 55% of Brits agree they prefer to tuck into a biscuit on the sofa, whilst others take theirs to bed (9%), the bath (1%), or even outdoors – with 10% indulging in the park and 9% snacking in the car.
Finally, when it comes to dunking, tea remains the favoured biscuit partner (45%), but some Brits are mixing it up as 1 in 10 revealed they enjoy crumbling biscuits into their yogurt (10%) or enjoying biscuits with savoury toppings like cheese (5%).
A spokesperson for McVitie’s comments: “Every day is National Biscuit Day for us at McVitie’s, but we wanted to celebrate the weird and wonderful ways Brits are eating biscuits. Whether you’re team Rich Tea or you dig a Digestive; enjoy biscuits for breakfast or at bedtime, eat Chocolate Digestives choc up or choc down, everyone has their own unique way to enjoy a biscuit. McVitie’s biscuits have been a staple in British households for over 180 years and Brits can look forward to many more years of these cherished biscuit-based moments.”
