Everyone knows February is the month of love and what better time than that to look for an engagement ring for your significant other? With over 1.9 million people searching for proposal ideas in the last month it’s safe to say engagement rings are on people’s minds. Luxury retailer Liberty has crunched the numbers and found the most popular engagement ring styles according to search data. Let’s check out their expert guide to buying the right ring for your partner.

Top five engagement ring styles:

Halo Engagement Rings

Like a solitaire ring but with added sparkle, the distinguishing feature of a halo engagement ring is a central stone that’s surrounded by multiple smaller stones. This stylistic touch adds definition and emphasises the size of the ring’s main stone.

Halo engagement rings have seen a 435% increase in searches in the last 5 years showing proof of their popularity.

Solitaire Engagement Rings

Considered to be the most iconic and classic style, solitaire engagement rings feature a plain band set with a single central diamond or precious gemstone – the ideal choice for minimalists.

Solitaire engagement rings popularity is on the rise with searches rising 255% in the last year.

Trilogy Engagement Rings

Showcasing three precious gemstones on a plain band, trilogy engagement rings often feature a central stone flanked by two smaller ones.

Trilogy engagement rings have averaged over 3,600 monthly searches for the last 6 months.

Diamond Band Engagement Rings

As the name suggests, this style of engagement ring features a band set with multiple micro diamonds and a larger diamond or precious gemstone as a focal point.

Diamond band engagement rings are seeing a rise in popularity with 276% more people discussing them online in 2024 compared to 2023.

Cluster Engagement Rings

Cluster engagement rings are known for being set with several stones that are usually different in size. They can also vary in cut, colour and size, making this style eye-catching.

Cluster engagement rings have remained popular over the years with average monthly searches remaining stable.

Top tips for finding the perfect one for “The One”:

  1. Figure out your partner’s style.

Do they prefer yellow or white gold? Classic or unique? Minimal or maximal? The golden rule is to remember that an engagement ring is for life so picking something that won’t date or fall out of style in 10 years is key.

  1. Decide if a diamond is the right gem for you.

Classics are timeless but a unique colourful gem can be a standout choice. The best gems for everyday wear are rubies, sapphires and diamonds.

  1. Don’t stress too much about getting the size perfect.

Most people don’t wear rings on their wedding finger, so even if you sneak to measure a ring from their collection it might be wrong. Jewellers will offer ring resizing, so focus on popping the question rather than the fit of the ring.

  1. Picking the perfect ring has nothing to do with the price tag.

There is no right or wrong answer to the question, “How much should I spend on an engagement ring?” and the most important thing is doing what you’re comfortable with.
