Individual Restaurant Group: one third of Brits have missed a birthday or anniversary

Individual Restaurant GroupBritain is becoming a nation of forgotten birthdays, anniversaries and milestones, as new research reveals modern life is changing how people mark (or miss) life’s important moments.

A poll of 2,000 UK adults, commissioned by Individual Restaurants, found more than a third of Brits (34%) have missed a birthday or anniversary over the past 12 months, with younger generations most likely to let celebrations slip.

The findings come as Individual Restaurants, the group behind Piccolino, Riva Blu and Restaurant Bar & Grill, launches Club IR, a completely reimagined loyalty app designed around the way guests now choose to dine, celebrate and connect.

More than a third (37%) of 18–34-year-olds admitted skipping special occasions altogether, compared with just 18% of those aged 65 and over, highlighting a growing generational shift in how people socialise, celebrate and spend quality time together.

Rather than rewarding infrequent luxury spending alone, Club IR has been created to support more spontaneous, experience-led and flexible dining habits, giving guests reasons to celebrate more often, whether that’s a birthday dinner, an impromptu catch-up over cocktails or a simple meal out after work.

The research suggests consumers are increasingly favouring smaller, more personal occasions over large-scale celebrations, with almost two thirds (63%) saying they now prefer marking milestones with something low-key.

Against a backdrop of busy schedules, financial pressures and changing social habits, Individual Restaurants says the hospitality industry has an opportunity to play a more meaningful role in helping people reconnect and create memorable experiences.

Created as the ultimate celebration companion, Club IR brings together birthday treats, dining rewards, cashback and personalised experiences in one place, making it easier for guests to plan, remember and enjoy occasions across the group’s portfolio of brands.

Members can unlock rewards across Piccolino, Riva Blu and Restaurant Bar & Grill, including £25 birthday rewards, cashback on regular dining visits and tailored benefits designed to make every day dining feel more rewarding and occasion-led.

From remembering favourite tables, key dates and go-to dishes and drinks, to making it effortless to book, send a gift card with a personalised message to a friend ‘just because’, or discover local events, the app puts everything in one place, even down to helpful nudges like a reminder to bring a brolly because it looks like rain at lunchtime today!.

Toni Dennan, group marketing & sales director at Individual Restaurants, said: “The way people celebrate is changing. Guests still want great food, quality and memorable experiences, but they also want flexibility and ease.

“We’re seeing more people celebrate in smaller, more spontaneous ways, a midweek dinner, a birthday catch up or simply getting people together around the table.

“Club IR has been created around that. It is more than a loyalty app; it helps us reward guests more personally, inspire them to visit more often, and make every occasion feel special.”

The new Club IR marks a shift away from short-term promotions towards a more considered approach to loyalty, one that builds over time and recognises guests from their very first visit.
