MadeForMums School Uniform Survey 2024 results revealed, families call for more “easy-on” uniforms

MadeForMums, the UK’s number one parenting site for product reviews, has today (Monday 22 July) announced the results of its 2024 school uniform testing.  With school holidays underway and school uniforms on sale, MadeForMums used rigorous testing processes and feedback from over 1000 British families to determine which primary school uniforms parents and children rated most highly.

Brands from 13 different retailers were included in the MadeForMums survey: M&S, Next, Tu at Sainsbury’s, F&F at Tesco, John Lewis, George at ASDA, Nutmeg at Morrisons, Very,  Trutex, Matalan, H&M, Lidl and Aldi, and 1035 parents and carers from across the country responded to the MadeForMums survey.

Of those, 311 (30.4%) parents and carers said they try to buy school uniform that has accommodations for additional needs. This has lead to the first ever “Best Easy On” category in the MadeForMums 2024 Awards.

Emily Longman-Wall at MadeForMums, said: “A key finding from this year’s School Uniform survey was the importance of Easy On clothing, with over 30% of parents and carers who responded saying they looked for these features in uniforms. They reported finding school uniform that helped their children be more independent at home and at school, was a game-changer and there were many families calling for more availability from all retailers, both in the summer uniform buying season and all year round.”

Parents’ feedback from the MadeForMums survey included:

  • “Having this additional needs aware uniform at the price point is, is a HUGE step towards making the world a more inclusive place.
  • “The Easy On range helps my son to be more independent with dressing as he has additional needs”
  • “The adaptations may seem pointless to some people, but honestly they are such a game changer, especially for children with hidden needs.”

Chrissa Wadlow, Founding Director of Sunshine Support, an award winning Special Educational Needs and Disabilities consultancy, said of the results: “In a world increasingly embracing diversity, it’s crucial for school uniform retailers to evolve accordingly. The growing issue of school avoidance can stem from uniform barriers. More accessible uniform options are essential—from accommodating sensory and cognitive differences in children to addressing physical disabilities and illnesses that require specialised designs. It’s imperative that every child’s needs are considered in the design and manufacturing of uniforms. Equally important is creating inclusive and accessible shopping experiences at the point of purchase.”
