Mount Gay, the world’s oldest running rum distillery, has unveiled The Cognac Cask Expression, the eighth release in its prestigious rums of Master Blender Collection. This unique expression, crafted by Master Blender, Trudiann Branker, is the manifestation of an experiment to explore the influence of ex Cognac casks on Mount Gay rum. Bottled at a bold 58% ABV and with only 6,276 bottles available worldwide, this exceptional rum invites enthusiasts to experience the artistry and heritage of Mount Gay like never before.
The Cognac Cask Expression rum is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, showcasing Mount Gay’s dedication to innovation while paying tribute to its 320-year legacy. Unlike any other release in the Master Blender Collection, this rum is the first to be entirely aged in casks that previously held Cognac. Trudiann Branker sought to create a rum that would harmonise perfectly with the delicate French oak casks sourced from the renowned house of Rémy Martin, based in France’s Cognac region, inspired by their rich history of the Cognac-making tradition.
With a shared legacy of crafting exceptional spirits, The House of Rémy Martin has produced exceptional cognacs for nearly three centuries. Their precious eaux-de-vie are aged in high quality French oak casks, crafted from large grain oak trees primarily sourced from the Limousin forests and well renowned for the excellence of their wood.
Trudiann Branker, Master Blender at Mount Gay says, “By aging rum completely in Cognac casks, we’ve allowed the interaction between the rum and the cask to bring forward a unique profile. The French oak imparts notes of dried fruits, vanilla, and oak, while the tropical climate of Barbados enhances the fruit-forward character of the rum. This is an elegant and unique release that showcases the best of both traditions, made rarer by the fact that this may be the end of the collection as we all know it to be.”
The subtle fruitiness of the traditional column distilled rums is the characteristic Master Blender Trudiann Branker chose to highlight for this limited-edition release. The result is a rich and opulent blend that reveals layers of flavour with every sip. On the nose, The Cognac Cask Expression rum offers an inviting bouquet of red fruits, vanilla, leather, and a touch of orange zest. The palate is a harmonious medley of cherry, salted caramel, brown sugar, and oak. The long finish carries a pleasant sweetness, underscored by the signature dryness imparted by the French oak casks.
The Cognac Cask Expression is a non-chill filtered rum, preserving its full richness and color, and is best enjoyed neat to fully appreciate its complex aroma and flavour profile. This single-batch rum was aged for four years in Cognac casks in Barbados’ tropical climate, resulting in a depth and refinement rarely seen in rum.
Available exclusively from the 2nd of June 2025, The Cognac Cask Expression rum is priced at £220 for a 70cl bottle and will be available at The Whisky Exchange, Master of Malt, Berry Bros and more. With only 6,276 bottles available, this limited edition release is set to become a coveted collector’s item.
