New sizing technology for bags hits the UK

Unisize, the flagship product of online sizing technology specialist, Makip, is now helping UK shoppers find the best-sized bag to suit their needs, body shape and size.

After introducing its latest innovation in the UK, FaceChange, which allows UK shoppers to virtually try on items of clothing they want to purchase by using AI to replace the faces of the online models, Makip’s technology now allows UK fashionistas to gain an accurate picture of how bags, backpacks and rucksacks will match their body size. In addition to illustrating how many items such as laptops, notebooks, purses and wallets can fit into their bag of choice.

With e-Commerce retail sales continuing to grow in 2024, and market size for bags in the UK estimated to increase by over £462m by 2028, there is a clear opportunity for UK e-Commerce fashion and apparel retailers to ensure they provide accurate and reliable sizing technology to deliver the very best online shopping experiences for their customers and help prevent returns, which is estimated to cost UK retailers £4.4bn by 2026.

Shingo Tsukamoto, CEO and President of Makip, said, “With current bag sizing technology, the contents are automatically calculated based on the size of the bag, and examples of specific items that can fit in the bag, such as a smartphone, or water bottle, are displayed, which may not show the shopper if they will cause the bag not to fasten, and do not allow the shopper to see how they will fit in the bag.

With Unisize for bags, a unique algorithm has been built to prevent items from being displayed if their contents protrude according to the shape of the bag, allowing users to see at a glance the capacity of the bag and how suitable it is for their needs, as well as comparing it to other bags.”

Tsukamoto continued, “Furthermore, just like Unisize for clothing, Unisize for bags allows the online shopper to see what the bag will look like when being worn/held against their body – this helps shoppers to make informed purchase decisions.”

Below is an image showing what users will see when using Uniszie for bags.

New sizing technology - TechnologyIntegration of Unisize can be achieved in as little as one month, delivering remarkable results such as a 20% reduction in return rates and a 2.5 times increase in purchase rates.

Already an established and successful brand in Japan, Makip supports over 300 online retail/e-Commerce sites and popular fashion brands including Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein and Lacoste. Unisize is also being used by UK fashion brands such as Komodo Fashion and Batch LDN where it is improving the online sizing experience and reducing the number of returns.

Unisize empowers shoppers to make informed sizing decisions when selecting clothing online, ultimately saving time and resources for both consumers and retailers alike. Unisize removes the element of doubt by providing accurate and efficient sizing recommendations.

“We are constantly developing the Unisize technology so that online shoppers can find the perfect item with the perfect fit to suit their needs. The latest innovation allows users to not only see how big a bag is when holding it, but also what kind of items can fit inside it.

Like clothing, often only product images are posted on e-commerce sites which can leave online shoppers unsure of how the bag will fit their body and what they will be able to fit in it,” concluded Tsukamoto.
