Following today’s release of Pets at Home’s figures for the 16 weeks ending 16 July 2026; Jake Kendrick, retail analyst at GlobalData, a leading intelligence and productivity platform, offers his view: “Pets at Home’s Q1 results demonstrate that its retail turnaround plan is gaining momentum and the group’s over-reliance on services to achieve growth, is beginning to rebalance. Group consumer revenue rose 3.9% to £614m, fuelled by a return to growth in its retail division, with retail consumer revenue up 4.9% in Q1. While this strengthened retail division represents a meaningful shift versus previous quarters, Pets at Home must ensure that gains are underpinned by sustained increases in traffic and improved loyalty, rather than short-term initiatives.
” The retail turnaround strategy implemented in FY2025/26, under the newly appointed CEO James Bailey, supported retail performance through refreshed ranges across dog food, cat food and treats, alongside the rollout of its Pets Club pricing and investment in its store estate. These changes have helped rebuild customer confidence and loyalty, as reflected in a 2% increase in retail transactions this quarter, as well as volume growth above its sales increase. Pets at Home must rebuild profitability alongside sales to recover from the sharp decline in FY2025/26. To achieve this, it should encourage customers to shift beyond everyday dog and cat food essentials into higher margin categories, by expanding its gourmet pet food ranges, accessories and toys, which will drive up basket sizes.
“The Vet Group remains an important revenue source, but growth is slowing with vet group consumer revenue at 1.9% versus 7.1% in Q1 last year. Care Plan subscriptions and higher average transaction values continue to support performance, but this deceleration reinforces that Pets at Home cannot rely on its services division alone. To drive group growth, sustained category improvements within the retail business remain the right strategic priority. Into next quarter, it is vital that the retailer executes its turnaround plan effectively by optimising product ranges following the category overhauls, expanding own-brand products to boost profitability given their higher margins, and using customer data from its large Pets Club member base to drive strategic decisions.”
