An innovative Scottish snack brand is turning up the heat in the crisp aisles across Scotmid’s convenience stores this week with the rollout of a unique new sweet potato crisp range, spearheaded by a bold chimichurri flavour bringing citrus, herbs, garlic and chilli.
The rollout follows Nudie Snack’s success in Scotmid’s Scottish Favourites programme – an annual competition run in partnership with Scotland Food & Drink that gives Scottish producers the opportunity to secure listings across the retailer’s store estate.
This year’s theme focused on innovation, and Nudie’s flavour-led approach secured its place in a category often dominated by traditional staples. Manufactured in Scotland, the sweet potato range also includes Sour Cream & Chive and Texas BBQ. Each pack contains under 100 calories per serving and is free from artificial additives, reflecting the brand’s focus on plant-based, free-from snacks, which it describes as “smarter snacking”.
Rodney Garnham, managing director at Nudie Snacks, said: “We’re always looking for ways to push flavour boundaries and bring something genuinely different to the shelf. Chimichurri is the kind of flavour profile people associate with great food in cooking and restaurants – fresh, layered and full of character – but it’s not something you often see translated into crisps in a way that really delivers.
“There’s still a perception that if something is plant-based or made with cleaner ingredients, it won’t pack the same punch. We don’t accept that. For us, better-for-you should still mean big flavour. We’re experimenting constantly, and this range is about proving you don’t have to compromise.
“Nudie is a Scottish company, making products in Scotland and championed by a fantastic Scottish team, so launching this range with Scotmid is a significant milestone. The Scottish Favourites platform has given us the opportunity to bring our latest flavour innovation to customers right across the country.”
Founded in 2016, Nudie first gained attention for its wonky cauliflower-based crisps and has since expanded its range, incorporating new vegetables and more flavour-led recipes as the brand has evolved.
Steven Addison, Local Sourcing Manager at Scotmid, added: “Innovation was at the heart of this year’s Scottish Favourites programme, and Nudie’s approach stood out immediately. The flavour development, combined with a clear focus on cleaner ingredients, captured exactly what we were looking for.
“As an independent Scottish co-operative, we are committed to championing ambitious local producers and helping them scale. Scottish Favourites is about backing bold ideas, and this range reflects that.”
Run in partnership with Scotland Food & Drink, Scottish Favourites provides a route to retail for emerging Scottish producers, helping them secure listings across Scotmid’s store network.
