The vision for Starbucks store of the future is here: it’s sustainable, accessible, and inclusive.
The company has announced significant progress towards this future vision and its goal to certify 10,000 Greener Stores globally by 2025 – nearly doubling its portfolio of Greener Stores in the past year alone to hit 6,091 certified stores and upholding its promise to give more than it takes from the planet.
Starbucks also announced the global Greener Stores of the Year award, given to one store in each of the company’s six regions to celebrate excellence in innovation and environmental impact.
This year’s North American recipient is in historic Williamsburg, Virginia – where a 100-year-old house was converted into a new café that operates on 100% local renewable electricity, uses a rainwater collection system, has banquettes made from recycled wood, and participates in the Grounds for your Garden program that provides grounds to customers.
What is a Starbucks Greener Store? (See video overview)
- Starbucks Greener Stores are the blueprint for all new stores around the world. Due to their innovative design and sustainable actions of partners (Starbucks employees), Greener Stores provide energy and water savings and waste diversion to help advance the company’s commitments to reduce carbon emissions, water usage, and landfill waste by 50% by 2030.
- Each of the 6,091 Greener Stores meets standards across eight environmental impact areas developed in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund and SCS Global Services.
- While some sustainable features of Greener Stores are visual to consumers – like solar panels or water recycling tanks – other aspects are more subtle, like high efficiency appliances, low-emitting paint and sealants and in store energy systems like composting and food donation.
- In the US, Greener Stores have saved nearly $60 million in annual operating costs, including 30% water savings and 30% energy reduction.
