Wine lovers opt for orange: rapid rise in sales suggests it’s set to be a corking summer for orange wine

Orange wine is making a splash this spring, as new data from Ocado has revealed a huge spike in sales and searches as Brits are looking for this season’s must-have vino.

Sales of orange wine over the last 12 months on Ocado.com, the world’s largest dedicated online supermarket, shot up by a whopping 99% compared to the previous 12 months.  It appears orange wine is captivating Brits’ curiosity and could be joining rosé as the go-to drink this summer, as searches have also increased by a huge 80% compared to the previous year.

Ocado’s data also shows the top ‘hot spots’ for orange wine in the UK, with London, Manchester and Kent the top three regions for sales last month. This represented a month-on-month increase of 437%, 120% and 115% respectively, pointing to it being a growing seasonal trend as the weather gets warmer. **

Christian Streatfield, wine buyer at Ocado Retail said: “Orange wine is increasingly popular with our customers. Unlike typical white wine production, the grape skins remain in contact with the juice during fermentation, producing complex flavours and textures, as well as that deeper colour. The resulting wine is delicious and versatile, with something to offer both red and white wine fans. I’d suggest newcomers to the style give the Cramele Recas Orange Wine  a try – it’s a real favourite of our customers, or the M&S Tbilvino Qvevris Orange Wine.”

Ocado drinks ambassador Helena Nicklin says: “Interest in orange wine is continuing to grow and it’s easy to see why: the intriguing colour aside, there’s the natural and historical element to it. It is, after all, how wine was first made over 3000 years ago. Orange wine is also an incredibly versatile wine style, sitting somewhere between a heavier white and a light red, with lots of texture as well as fruit and aromatics, making it ideal for food pairing or sipping alone.”

Explore the orange wines available at Ocado.com, including the Gerard Bertrand Organic Orange Gold and the Orange Wine – both available as part of the 25% off 6 offer until 27 May.
