New sustainable toothpaste tablet cuts water and waste

GudYu, established by British oral hygiene experts, has launched its first range of zero-waste and sustainably packaged toothpaste tablets. After being frustrated by the overuse of single-use plastics and wasteful toothpaste tubes, the founders set out to innovate in a space that has traditionally produced a lot of waste including product, packaging and water.

With 300 million toothpaste tubes ending up in landfills annually, GudYu provides a solution for plastic wastage. Using toothpaste tablets also breaks the habit of running the tap while brushing, which uses an average of 16 litres of water per two-minute brushing session. With GudYu, no water is needed while brushing at all – also making it the perfect travel companion for any trip!

The two GudYu products at launch are:

  • Fresh mint remineralising and whitening toothpaste tablets, designed for people six years old and over.
  • For children aged 3-8 years old, GudYu has created the Buttermint toothpaste tablets, with a friendly soft flavour.

GudYu’s tabs not only provide remineralising and whitening benefits for adults and children, they are also approved by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), making them vegan-friendly.

GudYu’s founder, Dr Avinash Sachdev, created GudYu with a clear vision of what they needed to solve:

Sustainability.

  • It takes 500 years for a single toothpaste tube to biodegrade in a landfill fully, and more than 10m tonnes of tubes end up in UK landfills every year.
  • GudYu reduces the amount of water during brushing, which currently equates to more than 200 billion litres of wasted water in the UK alone. (33% of people leave the tap running while brushing)
  • Many toothpaste brands use microplastics as abrasives to help remove plaque. These tiny plastic particles do not break down easily and can accumulate in water bodies, potentially harming marine life and entering the human food chain in the form of microplastics.

GudYu tablets are vegan and made from quality ingredients, without any animal-derived ingredients or artificial additives found in toothpaste tubes. GudYu’s plastic-free ethos is a carefully intentional approach and extends beyond the toothpaste tablets by packaging them in 100% aluminium tins that are fully recyclable – compact and perfect to take on holidays, whilst the refill and sample pouches are made from compostable paper.

Dr Avinash Sachdev, founder of GudYu, commented: “Through three years of development and dental expertise we have created a product for a world where oral care meets innovation, GudYu toothpaste tablets are poised to revolutionise the way we brush our teeth.

Our main goal was to reduce plastic usage without compromising dental health which is the case with other toothpaste tablets. We achieved this by precision dosing in every tablet, so that every tablet contains the perfect dosage of fluoride so that there is no over or under-use of the ingredient which can negatively impact children’s teeth in later life. It’s not just a toothpaste; it’s an eco-friendly, travel-friendly, and vegan companion, which gives your teeth a smoother and fresher feel than regular toothpaste. Bid farewell to wasteful tubes and hello to a brighter, cleaner future with toothpaste tablets.”
