Aldi, Britain’s biggest discounter, has revealed what shoppers have been buying during the heatwave, to keep cool and enjoy the record-breaking weather.
Sales of classic BBQ staples have surged amid the heatwave. Aldi sold 80% more Smash Burgers and Quarter Pounders this week than the same time last year, while over 80,000 packs of hotdogs flew off the shelves.
Brits also bought more beer. Aldi sold 34% more beer in the 24-hours before the England vs Ghana match than the previous week and is expecting even higher sales this weekend before the Three Lions’ match against Panama.
Sales of ice cream surged by 144% week-on-week, with more than 2.5 million units sold between Monday and Wednesday.
Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer at Aldi UK, said: “When the sun shines in the UK, we absolutely make the most of it. With soaring temperatures coinciding with the football, shoppers filled their baskets with items designed to bring people together.
“Brits’ sociable spirit remains strong, with more people choosing to host at home and finding smarter ways to entertain.
“At Aldi, we’re committed to low prices all year round, enabling people to get together and enjoy quality food and drink without the premium price tag.”
