Blue Nun returns to UK shelves

Les Grands Chais de France (GCF) is bringing Blue Nun back to the UK, reintroducing one of the world’s most recognisable wine brands with a refreshed look, wider distribution and a renewed focus on making wine more approachable for today’s consumers.

Following GCF’s 2024 acquisition of Franz Wilhelm Langguth Erben, Blue Nun returns to the UK market with an initial launch of Blue Nun Authentic White and Blue Nun Riesling, now available through Ocado (Authentic White) and Drink Supermarket (Authentic White and Riesling), with further distribution planned.

Founded in 1921, Blue Nun has sold more than one billion bottles worldwide and is available in 64 countries, making it the bestselling German wine brand of all time. For generations of consumers, the brand has served as an accessible introduction to wine, helping to establish German wine on the international stage.

Now under GCF ownership, Blue Nun enters its next chapter with updated branding that retains the iconic blue bottle while introducing a cleaner, more contemporary identity to appeal to modern wine drinkers.

The return comes as consumer demand continues to shift towards approachable, fruit-forward wines, lower-alcohol styles and more relaxed drinking occasions. With an ABV of 10%, Blue Nun Authentic White offers a fresh, easy-drinking style with aromas of apple, peach and citrus. Its moderate sweetness and lower alcohol make it a versatile partner for seafood, grilled chicken, Asian cuisine and dishes with spice, sweetness or umami.

With a slightly lower ABV of 9%, Blue Nun Authentic Riesling is made from grapes grown in Germany’s Rheinhessen region. This full-bodied wine has a modern, fruit-forward style with vibrant tropical flavours. Its lively acidity and subtle sweetness make it an excellent match for seafood, sushi, lightly spiced dishes and aromatic cuisines, and it also pairs well with summer salads and Mediterranean-inspired dishes.

The relaunch also reflects GCF’s broader philosophy of helping consumers discover wine with confidence through clear branding, accessible styles and trusted heritage brands.

“Blue Nun is one of the great success stories in the wine industry because it introduced millions of people around the world to German wine,” says Henry Colyer, UK marketing manager, GCF. “At GCF, we share the belief that wine should be welcoming, enjoyable and easy to discover. We’re proud to be bringing Blue Nun back to UK consumers and to introduce a new generation of drinkers to this iconic brand.”

Early retail performance has been encouraging.

“Blue Nun is a brand that instantly resonates with UK consumers, so stocking the refreshed range was an easy decision for us. We’ve seen a fantastic response since launch, with strong early sales that reflect both the brand’s heritage and its renewed appeal. We’re excited to support Blue Nun as it embarks on this new chapter,” says Jital Rao, Marketing Manager, Drink Supermarket.

With more than a century of heritage behind it, Blue Nun’s return pairs one of wine’s best-known names with a contemporary proposition for today’s consumers, demonstrating how established brands can continue to attract new drinkers through accessibility, recognisable branding and trusted quality.
