DeliverooDeliveroo publishes new data revealing some of the most surprising orders and trends as it celebrates surpassing two billion orders worldwide.

Since the company launched in 2013, Deliveroo has been there to satisfy a variety of tastes, occasions and life’s little emergencies all around the world.

The first ever restaurant order was a Margherita pizza from Rossopomodorro in Chelsea, London, delivered by co-founder Will Shu himself. Meanwhile, the billionth order was a Satay Mushroom and Beef Vermicelli Casserole with Braised Tofu and Pork Belly, placed at Wing Sing Restaurant in Hong Kong. Finally, the two billionth order was a chicken rice bowl from Chipotle in Paris.

From restaurants to retail and from Islington to Italy, it’s been a winding road to two billion. To celebrate the road to two billion, today Deliveroo reveals the weird and wonderful data behind the orders that have shaped the last decade.

Miki Kuusi, CEO of Deliveroo said: “Reaching two billion orders is a huge milestone and I want to recognise everyone around the world who has played a part in getting us here. To all of our wonderful riders, our restaurant partners big and small, and of course our customers – thank you. Onwards to three billion and beyond!”

Global order trends:

  • The Cheeseburger reigns supreme as the most ordered restaurant item globally, also taking the top spot in the UK, Ireland, France, Belgium, and the UAE.

  • Unsurprisingly, the crown belongs to the Margherita Pizza for the most ordered restaurant item in, you guessed it, Italy.

  • Customers in Kuwait sought to keep cool, with Iced Coffee taking the top spot as the most ordered restaurant item.

  • 4 pints of semi-skimmed milk is the most ordered grocery item globally, with bananas and cucumbers following closely in 2nd and 3rd place.

  • Hydration station: Hydration sachets, such as electrolytes, are the top ordered retail item globally.

  • The surprise add-on: Gloves also sit in the global top 10 retail items, frequently added by customers ordering hot chicken wings.

  • Romance isn’t dead: In the last year alone, Deliveroo has delivered approximately 195,000 bouquets of flowers globally.

  • The Super-Fan: Deliveroo’s most loyal and frequent individual customer is based in London, having placed over 9,000 orders to date. Their most loved treat? Chocolate Macarons.

UK order trends:

  • The 1 Billionth UK Order: A late-night Meat Feast pizza from Papa Johns.

  • The Pickiest City: Residents of Belfast are the UK’s fussiest eaters, requesting the most customisations (e.g. “no onions” or “sauce on the side”) per order.

  • The Sauciest City: Bournemouth takes the crown for “The Sauciest City,” ordering more extra sauce portions than anywhere else in the country.
