Finsbury Food Group celebrates sweet success as its caterpillar cakes dominate Which? taste test

Finsbury Food GroupFinsbury Food Group is celebrating a slice of success after an independent taste test by Which? revealed that a number of the nation’s favourite caterpillar cakes are being crafted by the same expert hands.

The speciality bakery manufacturer, which produces caterpillar cakes for numerous leading UK supermarkets, was revealed to be behind the majority of those ranked in the top tier.

Using a blind taste test, Which? enlisted a 75-strong panel to sample 9 caterpillar cakes, assessing everything from flavour and texture to appearance and aroma. With no branding visible and no discussion allowed between tasters, the results were based purely on what matters most: taste and enjoyment.

While the iconic caterpillar cake varies slightly in appearance from retailer to retailer, the taste test found that the winning formula remains consistent: rich chocolate flavour, perfectly balanced buttercream and a moist sponge. According to Which? achieving that harmony is “no easy feat”, yet it’s one Finsbury’s bakers have clearly mastered.

Adam Arnott, group grocery sales director at Finsbury Food Group, said: “Caterpillar cakes hold a special place in British celebrations, so we know how important it is to get every detail just right. From the depth of the chocolate flavour to the balance of sponge and buttercream, our teams spend countless hours refining recipes, testing textures and perfecting finishes.”

“What’s particularly exciting about this result is that it was a blind taste test. It shows that when branding is stripped away, what truly stands out is quality and flavour, and that’s exactly what we strive to deliver for our retail partners and their customers every day.”

Behind the scenes, Finsbury’s development teams work closely with retailers to continuously refine recipes and respond to evolving consumer preferences. Everything, from sweetness levels and portion sizes to texture and visual appeal are considered and optimised in line with shoppers’ habits. Each element is carefully considered, tested and perfected to ensure every cake delivers a consistently delicious experience.

The Which? results highlight just how competitive the caterpillar cake category has become, with all cakes scoring 64% or higher overall, a testament to the enduring popularity of this nostalgic British celebration cake.

For Finsbury Food Group, however, the results are a clear reflection of its commitment to quality, craftsmanship and innovation, and proof that when it comes to celebration cakes, the bakery manufacturer knows exactly how to deliver joy to shoppers.
