Gousto, the UK’s best recipe box for choice, is launching its Hungry Traveller range with an accompanying foodie phrase book, to empower customers to cook new dishes at home and learn new language skills for their next trip abroad. Its creation follows the finding that half of Brits (55%) are hesitant to order local cuisine when abroad because of language barriers.
The Hungry Traveller range is the latest in Gousto’s adventure to empower home cooks to gain confidence in the kitchen and beyond, with an appreciation of global cuisine. The new menu is available to order from 19th December 2023 to 29th January 2024, with delivery from 6th January to 1st February.
As a nation, our love for international cuisine and culture is clear: of those surveyed, almost half (48%) of adults who travel abroad have actively sought out a culinary experience whilst on holiday such as a local cooking class or tasting experience. However, language barriers persist, with over 3 in 5 (63%) favouring places to holiday abroad where they can speak the language. Interestingly, 18-35s are above average here at almost three-quarters (74%).
To bridge the gap between culture, cuisine and language skills, Gousto has worked with Britsh polyglot and linguist Alex Rawlings to create a phrase book fit for foodies. In the celebration of this adventurous spirit, he says: “Food and languages are both expressions of culture that are passed down from generation to generation, so I’m delighted to be working with Gousto on The Hungry Traveller guide to inspire Brits to be curious, confident and adventurous when trying and exploring new dishes, whether that’s a delicious tagine in Morocco or a nice, cooling glass of gazpacho on a hot summer’s day in Spain.”
The phrase book, available to download from The Hungry Traveller guide as a PDF for customers next trips, features food-related phrases such as Todo quedó muy rico (Spanish – meaning “everything was delicious), Buon appetito (Italian – meaning “Enjoy your food”), “Cảm ơn bạn về món ăn” (Vietnamese – meaning “Thank you for the food”) or Tee ñaatale baa (The Gambian – meaning “The food is delicious”). The dining destinations reflect the top 10 countries Brits voted they would most like to visit to sample the cuisine.
The phrasebook also includes phonetic transcriptions, cultural tips and recommended dishes. It also spotlights international recipes on the Gousto menu, so travellers can cook before they book, and create the experience at home.
Even though over eight in 10 (83%) have tried to recreate international dishes at home, more than one in five don’t always have the right ingredients. The other main challenges include complicated recipes and not having the right equipment. Gousto has easy-to-follow recipes with authentic ingredients and flavours, delivering destination cuisines to every home kitchen.
The Hungry Traveller range is a limited-edition menu that has been conceptualised by the Gousto Innovation Team, born from its own adventures and reverence for global culinary culture. Gousto customers can choose recipes from Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe. It invites culinary enthusiasts to embark on a gastronomic journey from the comfort of their kitchens, providing a taste of the world’s culinary delights, from just £2.99 a portion.

Sophie Nahmad, Gousto Chef said: “A new year means new adventures on the horizon. Our Food Team draws inspiration from all over the world, whether that’s time-honoured cooking techniques or little-known spices that help a dish sing. We want to bring a taste of global cuisine that customers won’t find in traditional cookbooks. There are mouthwatering meals for countries all over the world in our new Hungry Traveller range.”
The research also revealed that those who always try international cuisines or local dishes when travelling abroad are the most frequent travellers with 71% of Brits saying they do more than once a year. When quizzed about the top three countries for local cuisine, Brits highlighted Italy (56%), Mexico (32%), Spain (29%), Japan (27%) and Thailand (27%) as their favourite destination. Other contenders include the USA (26%), India (26%), Jamaica (19%), Morocco (16%) and Cuba (10%).
For those who feel adventurous and love trying out international cuisine, Gousto’s The Hungry Traveller range is to help Brits rediscover their favourite global dishes alongside some new far-out flavours that’ll transport their taste buds across the world.
